Rodalyn Knox Obituary

Rodalyn Knox died peacefully on July 2nd, 2022 while holding hands with her husband and high school sweetheart, John Knox. He first noticed Rodalyn as a Weare High School star basketball player in 10th grade. According to John, she was consistently either "the leading scorer or fouled out." From sock hops to cruise nights, they were soul mates to the end. Rodalyn was a devoted mother to two sons, Brian and Dan, whom she raised with infinite love and endless patience, which was frequently tested. As a parent, she led by quiet encouragement and positive example. She laughed often, listened well, and never asked for more effort and excellence than she would give - a high bar, to be sure. Her parental love extended to her only grandchild, Amelie Knox, who became a tremendous source of joy in her later years. At age four, Amelie once asked her grandmother if she was going to spoil her. "Yeah, probably" was the response. As it turns out, this was an accurate prediction, but Amelie eventually recovered. Rodalyn was born in March, 1946 in Goffstown, NH to Rodman and Evangeline Wilson. In addition to her parents' physical beauty and tireless work ethic, she inherited her father's natural curiosity and her mother's steadfastness. She remained close with her parents throughout her life and strongly believed she would join them in the afterlife. She cared greatly for her loyal sister, Susan Cote, who provided comfort to her during trying times. While family was a central focus of her life, Rodalyn is most widely known for her drag racing and tractor pulling career as 'The Country Girl.' In 1968, she began driving a Plymouth Hemi Super Stock car in the Powder Puff women-only class at New England Dragway, while husband John raced against the men for prize money. Eventually, John realized that Rodalyn was both quicker and faster than he was. He decided that it was better to "win than drive," and urged her to compete directly against the men. This decision was not without controversy at the time, and Rodalyn had to battle sexism and negative stereotypes against women in motor sports throughout her career. Early on, a particularly aggressive male competitor asked her before a race if she should be home "making cookies." She responded by winning the race and taunting her defeated competitor, suggesting that he should go home and practice his baking skills. For the record, family members have reported that her cookies were, in fact, delicious. Over the next 11 years, Rodalyn worked her way up from Super Stock to nitro funny cars. She took an extended break from the rigors of drag racing, and returned in 1990 to join husband John and son Brian in Unlimited Modified tractor pulling. Throughout the 1990's, the Knox family formed one of the most successful teams in tractor pulling history. Rodalyn won Rookie of the Year in 1990, and went on to win three national championships in 1995, 1997, and 1998. She was inducted into the National Tractor Pullers Association Hall of Fame in 2008, as the only female competitor so honored. When she was not thundering down the track, she enjoyed quiet pursuits, including gardening, baking, quilting, and knitting. She was a lover of animals, and trained border collies while tending sheep and goats on her farm in rural New Hampshire. Rodalyn Knox was many things to many people: wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, racer, quilter, trailblazer. Yet she was always true to herself. She remained humble, caring, and warm no matter what she was doing or who she was with. As anyone who met her would attest, it was truly a privilege to have known her.
