Randall John Pawich passed away on Friday, June 17, 2022.

Randy is survived by his wife Donna, son Joey of Calgary, AB, daughter Kari-Ann (Kris) Friesen of Elm Creek, MB, and granddaughters Scarlett, Macy and Kinsley Friesen.

Randy was born on December 11, 1953, the oldest son of Jack and Eileen Pawich. He grew up on the family farm in the Chesterville School District where he attended school along with his sister Valerie, and brothers Brent and Darren. With the farm also came the lifelong friendship of Frank Robinson, the best farmhand the Pawich family ever had and an honorary family member forever close to Randy's heart. Upon the completion of Grade 11 at Cartwright High School, he attended Assiniboine Community College where he received his heavy duty mechanics certificate. Though Randy loved working on equipment, he wasn't content to spend his summers confined to a shop. After convincing his dad to rent him a quarter, he began farming in the summers and working out west and in California for the winters.

Randy married Donna Wooley on April 21, 1979, and the two bought the family farm shortly thereafter. It was here that they raised their children Joey, born in 1979, and Kari-Ann, born in 1981. Randy loved grain farming but the couple would later expand their farm to include a large cattle operation he was extremely proud of. His soft spot for animals, starting with the raccoons he used to tame as a kid, would lead to a number of trusty border collie dogs becoming inseparable companions - and even a few special farm cats working their way into his heart over the years.

Away from the farm, Randy loved to golf in the summers and curl in the winters. Always a highlight, annual fishing trips to Snow Lake were a source of unforgettable stories and memories with family. He also took pride in maintaining his giant weed-free garden with its perfectly straight rows.

He added the role of auctioneer to his resume in 1994 and loved all types of auctions, from farm to household to antiques. Community was important to Randy and he happily supported it through CCIS auctions . At the annual Cartwright United Church pie auction, he fetched legendary prices for homemade pies, his mom’s saskatoon offering being a consistent crowd favourite. He also served on local boards such as the Kinsmen Club, Badger Creek Club, CCIS board, church board and a number of farm organizations, to name a few. He was never afraid to roll up his sleeves to get a job done or use his gift of the gab and act as an MC.

Randy will be remembered for many things. Storytelling was one – he could spin a tale like no other. His signature cowboy hat and boots were made for dancing and there weren’t many two-steps he could sit out. But of the many hats he wore in life, the most important was that of Poppa to Scarlett, Macy and Kinsley. They were the apples of his eye and brought out the best in the big kid deep down inside of him.

He was a big guy with a big personality and an even bigger heart. We will forever miss him.

It’s difficult to fully express our gratitude for the kindness and support that’s been shown to our family. We have truly appreciated the cards, messages, phone calls and meals we have received. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Cartwright and Area Foundation, Box 249, Cartwright, MB R0K 0L0.
