Sandra J. Hanson Obituary

Sandra J. Hanson, 74, of Biddeford, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 10, at Biddeford Estates in Biddeford.

She was born on March 6, 1949, to Richard and Lois (Brooks) Mathews in Sanford. She grew up in Somersworth and attended local schools graduating from Somersworth High School in 1968.  Sandra then attended college to become a lab technician.

Sandra was employed at Wentworth Douglas hospital for a time and worked at Greenwood Center in Sanford for 20 years.

She was a longtime member of the Order of Pythian Sisters for many years and enjoyed traveling with them around the country.

She was also a member of the Tri-City Baptist Church in Somersworth.

Though Sandra did not have children of her own, she was a loving aunt to her nieces and adored them as her own. As the girls grew up, Sandra remained small in stature, and they called her “Little Auntie”.

Her height was barely 4’6 and people thought she was adorable.  However, the quote “Though she be little she is fierce” is perfect to describe Sandra.  She was a dynamic and feisty lady who somehow let everyone know she was boss.  She was hard working, detail oriented and always got the job done. Even during difficult times, she pushed on and never gave up.

Recently, Sandra enjoyed watching television and doing word searches.  She also loved animals, especially cats. She will be missed by all that loved her.

She is predeceased by her parents Richard and Lois Mathews and a brother Wayne Mathews.

Survivors include her sisters Priscilla (Pam) Davidson of Sanford, and Nancy Leonard, many nieces and nephews, and long-time family friend Deborah Whalen.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 17 at 2:00 P.M.  at Riverside Cemetery in Springvale.

The family would like to extend their deep gratitude to the staff at Biddeford Estates and Southern Maine Hospice for the outstanding care and love they gave to Sandra.

Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
