Heather Elaine Strom Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Heather Elaine Strom (nee Hicks) announces her passing on Sunday June 5, 2022, at the age of 68 years

She was born August 4, 1953, to parents Jessie (McTeer) and Edwin Hicks in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. She grew up on a mixed farm near Fairholm and attended various schools in the district, was active in 4H and completed Grade 12 at Edam High School.

She went on to study at the University of Saskatchewan and obtained her BA and BEd and that is where she met her husband Dennis Strom (of Prince Albert). They were married January 3, 1972 and welcomed their first daughter the same year. They went on to have 3 more children.  In January, Heather and Dennis celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

After graduating with her degree in Saskatoon, the family moved to Buffalo Narrows in 1975 where Heather took a teaching position at Twin Lakes School. The family moved to Creighton in 1977 where Heather continued her teaching career and began teaching adult education at Northlands Community College. She later became a Program Coordinator, a position that took her across Northeastern Saskatchewan.

She was active in her community, serving on Creighton Town Council, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Women’s Auxiliary, and Creighton Community Club Women’s Group. When she was physically able, she loved to curl and take her children to all their sports and activities.

Heather was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition - Stiff Person Syndrome - in 1989. This led her to her early retirement in 1996. It then became her pursuit to advocate for those less fortunate and with limited movement abilities.

Heather was predeceased by her mother Jessie and her father Edwin and is survived by her husband, children, and grandchildren; Tracy Gaja (Joe and Catherine), Stacy Strom, Michael Strom (Michelle, Logan, Noah, and Emmett) and Melissa Strom (Curtis Ziola).

Heather loved the mountains, taking trips in her motorhome, gardening, flowers, and her beloved pets (Mama and Kit-Kat will miss her). Most of all, she cherished her time with her grandchildren.

A private family service will be held as per her wishes. In lieu of flowers- the family requests donations to be made to the Flin Flon SPCA.
