Sarah (Pooley) Chapman Obituary

Sarah Pooley Chapman, age 81, died peacefully at her home in New Boston, NH on May 30, 2022, after a long battle with cancer. Born in Grinnell, Iowa on May 25, 1941, Sarah spent parts of her childhood in Framingham, MA, Cleveland, OH, Libertyville, IL, and Duluth, MN, where she graduated from high school. After studying English at the University of Wisconsin, Sarah lived in San Francisco, CA, San Diego, CA and New London, Hartford, and East Granby, CT. In 1972, she married Donald Chapman and the two settled in New Boston in 1973. After arriving in New Boston, Sarah and Don quickly fell in love with the town and became involved in many of its undertakings. The Piscataquog Watershed Association, New Boston Players, Little People’s Depot Kindergarten, and New Boston Fourth of July were avenues for her early involvement in the community. In 1976, Sarah began working at the Whipple Free Public Library. Within a few years, she rose to become Library Director, a post she held for the rest of her life. As Library Director, she oversaw two major expansions of library facilities and many advances in library programming. Sarah also served over 30 years as Supervisor of the Voters Checklist. Sarah was predeceased by her parents, John and Mary Pooley of Duluth, MN. She is survived by her husband, Donald Chapman, of New Boston; sister, Martha Barmantje of Carol Stream, IL; and sons, Matthew (Sarah Beman) of Golden Valley, MN; Eric (Amy) Bennett of Wayland, MA; and Scott (Julie) Bennett of Franklin, WI. She was the devoted grandmother of Xander and Libby Chapman (Golden Valley, MN), Jack and Abby Bennett (Wayland, MA), and Connor and Sophia Bennett (Franklin, WI). All three sons grew up in New Boston and graduated from Goffstown High School. There will be a Memorial Service in Sarah’s honor at 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 25 at the Whipple Free Library, with calling hours from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Whipple Free Library Foundation or the New Boston Fire Department Building Fund.
