Louis F. Matykiewicz Moline, Illinois Obituary

Louis F. Matykiewicz

Louis (Lou) F. Matykiewicz, Jr., 88, of Rock Island, IL passed away Sunday, May 22, 2022 at Friendship Manor Silver Cross, Rock Island. Lou was born December 1, 1933 in Chicago at Cook County Hospital for the sum of 10 cents. He was the son of Louis and Mary Matykiewicz. Lou was married to Jane Hallenbeck in 1954 until her death in 1964. Lou then found love again with Phyllis Sprycha who he married in 1965. They were married for 55 years. A gregarious, larger than life figure, who bled Hawkeye black and gold, Lou loved his family, Iowa Hawkeyes, and scotch, in no particular order. Lou was immensely proud of his 9 children, sharing tales about them with anyone who would listen. He attended the University of Iowa earning varsity letters in 1952, 53 and 54. As a football player for Iowa, Lou was a coach’s dream. Under the tutelage of Forest Evashevski, he started as quarterback and linebacker during the two platoon system; then switched offensive positions to tight end. Lou had the dubious distinction of leading the Big 10 Conference in both interceptions thrown and caught in the same season. Lou is survived by Al Matykiewicz, Coral Gables, Fl., Andy (Janci) Matykiewicz, Green Cove Springs, Fl., Tom (Misty) Matykiewicz, Springfield, Il., Jim (Kathy) Matykewicz, Westminster, CO., Bill (Gerardo) Matykiewicz, Hollywood FL., Mike (Becky) Matykiewicz, Orion, IL., Ann (Joe) Sobaski, Moline, IL., Dave (Janna) Matykiewicz, Cordova, TN., and Mark (Edie) Matykiewicz, Spring Hill, TN., 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 am on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at Rafferty Funeral Home 2111-1st St. A, Moline with visitation one hour prior to the services. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, East Moline. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
