Mr. Paul Stander, age 86, of Norwalk, formerly of Alton and Orange City, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022, at the Arbor Springs of West Des Moines Senior Living. A visitation with the family present will be held on Thursday, May 19, from 5:00pm to 6:30pm at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. There will be a funeral service on Friday, May 20, at 9:30am, at the church with the Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements. Paul Dean was born on July 7, 1935, in Alton, the son of Dick and Esther (Schreur) Stander. He grew up in Alton, where he attended the public school. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a medic in Germany until his honorable discharge in July of 1956. On August 23, 1956, he was united in marriage to Lois Ruth Zevenbergen in Orange City. They made their home and raised their family on a farm just outside of Alton. In addition to farming, Paul also worked in the maintenance department of Harker’s in Orange City. After retiring, he and Lois moved to Lake Park, where they lived for several years before returning to Orange City. Mr. Stander was currently a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City and a former member of the Good News Community Church in Okoboji and the Alton Reformed Church, where he had served on the church’s consistory and as Sunday School Superintendent. Paul and Lois were able to spend numerous winters in Texas, where they attended the First Assembly of God Church in Seadrift. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, going fishing and camping, bowling, and playing cards, table games, and horseshoes. Survivors include his wife of more than 65 years, Lois, of Norwalk; six children and their spouses, Jana and Garry Brumels, of Norwalk; Pamela and Boyd Erickson, of Maurice; Randall and Crystal Stander, of Sioux Center; Nancy and Michael Sadauskis, of Lake City, Minnesota; Amy and Richard Borrink, of De Witt; and Ryan and Karina Stander, of Minot, North Dakota; twenty grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis, and her husband, Harley Kleinwolterink, of Orange City; a sister-in-law, Carol Van Gelder, of Orange City; two step-brothers and their wives, Muryl and Rose Korver, of Hospers; and Audley “Bud” and Mary Korver, of Council Bluffs; and a step-sister and her husband, Lois and Roger De Geest, of Casa Grande, Arizona. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Winnie Stander; and a brother-in-law, Gary Van Gelder. Memorials may be directed to the First Assembly of God Church in Seadrift, Texas.
