Edward Charles Hoover Obituary

Edward C. Hoover, 92, passed away on May 14, 2022.  The love of his life, wife Mary Jane Hoover, 91, passed away just three weeks later on June 4, 2022.  Both were called to heaven on beautiful, bright sunny Saturday mornings.  Longtime residents of Penn Hills, PA, they both passed away in Rochester, NY. Edward (Ed) was born on September 26, 1929 to Grove and Helen Hoover in Altoona, PA, and was the youngest of four boys. Mary Jane (Jane) was born on September 26, 1930 to Isaac and Matilda Treese in Hollidaysburg, PA and was an only child.  Sharing the same birthdate, Ed and Jane actually first met when Jane was three days old and Ed was one year and three days old.  It took them a while, but eventually they started dating in June of 1952 and married six months later on Christmas Eve of that same year.  They adored each other and had a beautiful, loving marriage that lasted for 69 years.

Ed graduated in 1952 from the Pennsylvania State University where he played football under coach Rip Engle and assistant coach Joe Paterno.  He served in the military from 1952 to 1954 and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. He went on to attend Shippensburg State College where he earned his Social Studies Certification in 1954.  He earned his Master’s in Education and his Guidance Certificate from Duquesne University in 1960, and earned his Secondary Principal Certificate there in 1967.  Ed worked for the Penn Hills School District from 1955 through 1991, first as a Social Studies Teacher, then as a Guidance Counselor and Vice Principal.  He ended his career as Principal of Penn Hills Senior High School.  Ed’s sole hobby was helping others, and the list of his volunteer activities is numerous, including church activities and committees, as a member of Kiwanis Club, delivering Meals on Wheels and distributing food, clothing and medical supplies to those in need through the Penn Hills Service Association where he was President from 1991 through 2020.

Ed and Jane are survived by their daughters Mary Anne (C.J. Manoli) of San Rafael, CA and Linda (Hugh Manoli) of Rochester, NY; their five grandsons John, Charles, Christian, Hugh and Edward; and numerous nieces and nephews.  They were preceded in death by their beloved son, Steven E. Hoover.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Hebron Church in Penn Hills.  In lieu of sending flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Penn Hills Service Association.
