Judy Kay Howie

Judy Kay (Benson) Howie 79, of Fishers, Indiana, passed away on May 11, 2022, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. She was born on May 16, 1942, in Lawrence County, Illinois at home, and was the oldest child of the late Kent Andrew Benson and Neoma Pearl (Gowen) Benson. She spent her childhood on the family farm near Allison Prairie. When Judy was 5 they lived near a school. Her mom could not keep her home from the school. She always loved books and learning. Judy graduated from Lawrenceville High School in 1959. She spent two years at Vincennes University where she studied education and played on the university softball team. After VU she taught in Sailor Springs, Illinois. From there she went to Eastern Illinois University where she met the love of her life, Larry Howie, on the school’s library steps. They married on September 1, 1962, in Danville, Illinois. She graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1964. Judy and Larry spent time living in Danville and Mattoon, Illinois and Lake City, Florida, eventually settling in Carmel, Indiana, with their two sons, where they lived for 35 years. Judy earned her master’s degree at Butler University. She taught 1st through 3rd grades at Saint Pius X for over 20 years. She then worked at the Hamilton East, Westfield, and Fishers branches of the Hamilton County Library for 15 years. She loved her family, reading a good murder mystery, traveling around the world, attending her grandchildren’s events, and playing cards. Judy enjoyed participating in so many of the clubs at Britton Falls and she even started the community library. In addition to her husband of nearly 60 years, Larry Eugene Howie, she is survived by her sons Douglas (Courtney) Howie and Derek (Amy) Howie, sister Nancy (Joe Scudder) Gray, brother John (Jane) Benson, and grandchildren Rachel Howie, Malea Howie, Mitchell Howie, and Zeke Howie. Visitation will be on Friday, May 20, 2022 from 9:30 am -12:00 pm, with a short service at 11:00 am at Indiana Funeral Care, 8151 Allisonville Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46250. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gleaners Food Bank at https://www.gleaners.org/
