Dr. Sid Jones Obituary

Dr. Sid Jones, 95, passed away peacefully May 10, 2022. Services will be held at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church Monday, May 16 at 1:00 p.m., with Reverend John Ryan officiating. Burial will precede the service for family only. Visitation will be at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home from 5 – 7 p.m. Sunday, May 15. John Sid Jones was born June 1, 1926, in Dallas, Texas. He was the son of George H. Jones and Violet Underwood Jones. He grew up in Collin County and graduated from McKinney High School in 1943. He attended Baylor University until 1944, when he joined the Navy. After training in California, he served on the U.S.S. North Carolina in the Pacific in the latter months of World War II. He was discharged in 1946 and resumed his education at Baylor University, where he was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, a national honorary pre-med fraternity, and the Baylor Chamber of Commerce. He received his B.S. from Baylor in 1948 and his M.D. in 1952 from The University of Texas at Galveston, where he was a member of Phi Chi fraternity. On April 16, 1949, he married Jane Powell at South Main Baptist Church in Houston. After several years of training at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, he was on staff at M.D. Anderson Hospital and in the private practice of urology. In 1961, the family moved to Waco where he practiced until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the South Central Section of A.U.A. and served as president of the Texas Urological Society and as President of the Hillcrest Baptist Hospital Staff. Sid served on the Board of Trustees at Baylor University for nine years during the presidency of Judge Abner McCall and chaired the committee that studied and recommended the preservation of the two original buildings on campus, Burleson Hall and Old Main. He and his wife also served on the Baylor Development Council for many years. He served as a director in the Waco Symphony Association, and he and his wife attended the symphony for 55 years. He also served as a director in the Baylor Bear Foundation and was an avid Baylor sports fan. He served on the Board of Directors of the Pape Foundation for twenty-two years and was involved in the development of the Pape Gardens. He was also a member of the Waco Rotary Club. In 2005, the Greater Waco Interfaith Conference selected him as the Humanitarian of the Year. He was a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Since retiring from active practice, he has been more involved with some family properties, as well as the George H. and Sid W. Jones Scholarship, which was established at Baylor by his grandparents, in honor of his namesake and his father. Sid and his wife Jane impacted countless lives through their generosity with the scholarship and their legacy lives on through all of the people’s lives they touched. Sid loved bird hunting and enjoyed many hunting trips in Kansas with his son and grandsons. He was a true gentleman and loved the practice of medicine. Nothing gave Sid greater joy than helping those in need, and he often made hospital visits to friends and family and frequently made house calls as well. His kind and gentle manner was valued and appreciated by patients and friends alike. He was a true family man and was married to his wife Jane for 72 years. They cherished time with their family and nothing brought Sid greater joy than being a husband, father, grandfather and great-grand father. He spent his life serving those he loved. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Jones; his parents, George and Violet Jones; his sister, Marjorie Lloyd and her husband, Ralph Lloyd. He is survived by his son, Gregg Jones and wife, Anna; daughter, Sydne Bartlett and husband, George; grandchildren, Bryan Harrison and wife, Mimi, Beth Richards and husband, Chris, Alistair Jones, Stuart Jones, and Claire Jones; and great-grandchildren, Betsy Grace Harrison, Lucy Beth Harrison, Hattie Belle Harrison, Mary Mac Harrison, Chase Richards, and Reese Richards. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bryan Harrison, Alistair Jones, Stuart Jones, Chris Richards, Ralph Lloyd, John Lloyd, Glenn Powell, and Keith Powell. Memorials may be made to the Waco Symphony Association, 600 Austin Avenue, Waco, TX 76701. The family expresses their deepest gratitude to Nancy Uptmore for her loyalty and devotion to Jane and Sid throughout the years. They would also like to thank Trung Giang and the amazing caregivers from Right at Home for the compassionate and loving care provided to Jane and Sid and their family, including Nicole, Detria, Patty, Eva, Rondalyn, and Vicki. The family would also like to thank Shawna Brewer and the staff from Bluebonnet Health Services, Dr. David Myers and his staff, and the Providence Hospice nurses for their compassionate care of Sid in his final days.
