Jean M. Kort Obituary

Kort, Jean M. (nee Leyman) passed away on May 12, 2022, at the Holland Christian Home, North Haledon, NJ. Jean was born in Paterson, NJ in 1931to Henrietta & Peter Leyman, she was their only child. She grew up in a neighborhood surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She was the first grandchild of Dirk and Jennie Kuiken. Taking after her mother, a bookkeeper, Jean worked in the Prospect Park National Bank in the bookkeeping department. Jean unfortunately lost her mother at the young age of 17, but was fortunate to have so many Kuiken family members to help raise her, it does take a village. Jean attended the Eastern Academy where she met the love of her life Henry (Hank) Kort. They fell in love and married in June of 1951. In 1953 she gave birth to a daughter named Patricia followed by Kevin, Ronald, Thomas, Cynthia, and Debra. She had always said that she wanted to have six children and did. She was a member of Abundant Life Reformed Church formerly Second Reformed Church in Wyckoff, NJ for many years. She was a "Stay at Home" mom and loved the house they built in Mahwah, NJ. Life for Jean was one that completely revolved around her family. She loved to entertain and always enjoyed having company over to swim, play cards and games and enjoyed watching her children play sports. She was our cheerleader, nurse, and taxi and always put others, especially her children, before herself. She never complained and thoroughly enjoyed being involved in our lives. She was someone with whom you could confide in and get an honest answer. Her opinions were often quite insightful and incredibly helpful. Mom was so proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved getting pictures from everyone around the country and to see them grow. She loved to play tennis with all her "tennis ladies", bowling, and volunteering at "The Depot". Mom also became deeply involved with the Eastern Christian Children's Retreat Ladies Auxiliary. She felt that this was a home for children who were blessed with God's special gifts. She volunteered with joy and became Treasurer of the Auxiliary and served for many years.

Although she suffered loss, the debilitating stroke that affected Hank and ultimately took his life in 2004, the loss of her daughter Patricia in 2009 and most recently her son Kevin. But what always remained was her never ending faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ.

Jean is survived by her children, Ronald (Kim) Kort, Thomas (Jeanne) Kort, Cynthia Hendrix and Debra (Steven) Matson, her 14 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren, with two more on the way!

As a family, we would like to extend our gratitude to the "Holland Christian Home Family" that adopted her as one of their own.
