Ruth E. (Stough) Schmidt, 91, passed on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at The Brethren Home Cross Keys Village, New Oxford. She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert E. Schmidt. Ruth was born in West York on February 25,1931, the daughter of George E. and Purdon M. (Trimmer) Stough. Ruth worked for several decades as the secretary for the York First Church of the Brethren. She was a member of the church since 1949, active especially in the music program in the chancel choir, Jubilee bell choir, and was a chapel and youth choir pianist. She volunteered for years with the American Red Cross Blood Mobile and also at the Brethren Home Cross Keys Village gift shop. Ruth worked at the York Fair in the Needle Craft Department beginning in 1960 and became their supervisor in 1993. Ruth is survived by two sons: Frederick J. Schmidt and wife Brenda and Douglas H. Schmidt and wife Beth and daughter-in-law Billie Schmidt. She was predeceased in death by her two sons: Stephen V. Schmidt and John W. Schmidt; as well as her brother Carl and sister Janet. She had five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A private celebration of life will be held.
