Neill Angus McDonald III Raeford, North Carolina Obituary

Neill Angus McDonald III

Mr. Neill Angus McDonald III of Raeford died on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at the age of 82. He died at his home, very peacefully and painlessly.
Neill was born in Hoke County on November 4, 1939, to the late Neill A. McDonald, Jr. and Carrie Moore Nash McDonald. He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriett S. McDonald, his son, Neill Angus (Mackie) McDonald IV, and his beloved dog, Fiona. Neill was the owner and operator of Raeford Oil Co., Inc.
Neill grew up in Raeford, graduated from Hoke County High School, and went to Campbell College, now Campbell University, for 3 and a half years. Neill’s father died in Neill’s last semester of college, and Neill had no choice but to come home and take care of his mother, McDonald’s Tire Recapping Service, and Raeford Oil Company. Neill owned and operated McDonald’s Tire Recapping Service for 36 years. While he worked full time in the tire business, he also kept up with everything at Raeford Oil Co., ran a wrecker service, and was an active member of the Raeford Fire Department, serving as the Assistant Chief during his 37 years of service. After selling McDonald’s Tire Recapping in the late 90’s, he began working full time at Raeford Oil Co., Inc. Neill fought pancreatic cancer gracefully, stoically, and was a fighter until his last breath. He was so heartbroken that he was no longer able to go to work around mid February of this year.
On May 10, 1975, Neill married Harriett Smith. In the same year, he very graciously adopted Harriett’s daughter, Mary Emily. In 1977, Neill and Harriett had a son, Neill A.(Mackie) McDonald IV. Daddy and Mackie had one of the most beautiful relationships with pure, unconditional love, and a part of Neill died when Mackie died. Neill had his membership at Raeford Presbyterian Church, but he was an active attendant at Antioch Presbyterian Church for many years. Neill helped so many people in Raeford and beyond. He made significant contributions to helping make Raeford the wonderful small town that it is. He helped many people behind the scenes, and everyone who knew him has a story of how he had helped them in the past.
Neill is survived by his daughter, Mary Emily McDonald, of Raeford, a Godson, Younger Fletcher (Tripp) Snead, of Panama, a Goddaughter, Betty Blue, of Raeford, a sister-in-law, Melinda Smith, of Pinehurst, 2 nieces, Kimberly S. Gardner (Keith), of Fayetteville, and Elizabeth S. Moynahan (Will), of Lexington, KY, his beloved children at Raeford Oil Co., and by his special friend, Mrs. Margaret S. Hathaway, who made Neill the happiest he’d ever been, in the 5 years they were together. Mary Emily would like to thank First Health Hospice, and a special thank you to Rosalie Davis, Jessica Davis, Cosandra Scott, Wanda Jordan, and Shayla Robinson, who were literal angels who helped take care of Neill the last 3 weeks of his life. Mary Emily also would like to thank Margaret Hathaway, Betty Blue, Joy Tompkins, all of the employees of Raeford Oil Company, and all of the kind folks who brought food, came to visit, or in any way that helped make our lives easier during the 3 and a half years that we fought as hard as possible to get him the best possible care and doctors.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 14, at the Raeford Cemetery, with Pastor Jim Smith officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the gravesite. The family also asks that everyone respect our privacy and time between now and Saturday, as there is a lot to do and very few days to have everything planned before Saturday.
For those who really knew Neill, you know he thought flowers were a waste of hard earned money. In Lieu of flowers, Neill and Mary Emily discussed which organizations, charities, etc., that he wanted memorials to go to, and they are: Antioch Presbyterian Church, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

I was sad to hear of Neill passing. He was a true southern gentleman and a friend. If the world had folks like Neill a, well it would be a lot better place. Many prayers to you all. RIP Neill A.
