Michael Perkins Curtin Obituary

Michael P. Curtin, age 80, passed away suddenly and peacefully on Monday night, May 9, 2022, after battling Parkinson’s Disease.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Curtin and Elizabeth McKinney, and his stepfather Shelt McKinney.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Nancy Partridge Curtin, Gulfport; his sister Martha Ann Curtin and her wife, Barbara Gaffney, Bay St. Louis; his children, Michelle Curtin Naef, Syracuse, NY, and Amy Curtin, Tampa, FL; his granddaughters, Jennifer and husband Jason Orendorf, Camillus, NY, and Molly Naef, Syracuse, NY; and his great-grandson Henry Orendorf, Camillus, NY. Mike was a devoted family man who loved spending time with family members.

Born and raised in Dade City, FL, Mike graduated from Pasco County High School where he played football and basketball and ran track. He attended Southern Miss, now known as the University of Southern Mississippi, where he enjoyed his time with the KA’s – maybe a little too much.

Mike retired after working offshore 20 years for Texaco. He retired a second time after spending 20 years as a Harrison County Sheriff’s Deputy assigned to the Chancery Court as a bailiff. Mike was also a licensed real estate broker in Gulfport.

Mike was artistic as well as athletic. He was a gifted photographer; he also enjoyed painting in the Bob Ross style. Mike loved the outdoors, whether camping in the woods, sow-skiing out West in the spring, or fishing in the bayous or the Gulf of Mexico. Another hobby he took up was building (and often rebuilding) and flying remote-controlled airplanes at the Harrison County flying field. Mike was a football fanatic - - whether college or the NFL. He was a die-hard Saints fan, as well as a lifelong follower of the Florida Gators. Mike loved music and people. He was the life of the party with a reputation for being an instigator, accomplished with a twinkle in his eye.

The family is grateful for the loving care Mike received in recent hospitalizations at Memorial Hospital, Singing River Gulfport (both the hospital and the skilled nursing facility), Select Specialty Hospital, and Stone County Nursing and Rehabilitation. We especially appreciate the love and attention he received from Lisa (Willis) and Theresa during his brief stay in the Beach House, as well as form Brenda and Willett and so many others in the Cove at Seashore Highlands. Mike loved the time he spent there, especially the boxing class.

The family suggests donations in memory of Mike to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York, NY 10163-4777) and/or the Humane Society of South Mississippi (2615-B 25th Ave., Gulfport, MS 39501).

A visitation will be 1-2 pm, Monday, May 23, 2022, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Sanctuary. A funeral service will be after the visitation at 2pm.
