Giuseppina “Josephine” (Cumbo) Sferrazza, 102, (almost 103) entered into eternal rest on Thursday, May 5, 2022 surrounded by her loving family and Little Sisters of St. Jeanne Jugan at St. Joseph’s Residence in Enfield, CT. Born on June 28, 1919 to the late Calogero and Calogera (Marrone) Cumbo. She was the loving wife of the late Rosario Sferrazza and is survived by her loving son, Retired Enfield Chief of Police, Carl Sferrazza & wife DonnaLee, two grandchildren, Alex and Audra; a sister-in-law, Monica of London, England, along with many nieces and nephews in Sicily, England, Italy, Enfield, CT and dear friends. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Stefano, Vincenzo, Calogera “Lilli” Antonietta, Concetta, and Maria.
“Josifina” or “Mama Jo” as she was affectionately called by her friends & staff at “Little Sisters” was hard working and very supportive of her family, especially, proud of her son & his devoted family. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, crocheting, drawing and enjoyed taking walks. A seamstress by trade having learned her trade in Italy, she was employed by Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co. & Rainbow Coat Factory. While living at St. Joseph’s she continued her hobbies, crocheted blankets, booties, hats to be donated to local shelters & newborn babies, as well as worked in the kitchen & library. She was a member of St. Patrick Church, St. Joseph’s Club and the Mount Carmel Ladies Society.
Josie’s family is grateful for the wonderful, compassionate and loving care given to her by the Little Sister’s of St. Jeanne Jugan, nurses & all of the staff over the years.
Friends may gather with her family during calling hours on Monday, May 9, 2022 from 9:00 to 11:00 at Browne Memorial Chapels, Enfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow to be celebrated at 11:30 am in Holy Family Church, (St. Jeanne Jugan Parish), Enfield. Interment will then take place in the Thompsonville Cemetery, Enfield, CT.
