Merle Robert Sayers

Merle R. Sayers, 84, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 27, 2022, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. <br><br>Merle was born March 20, 1938, in Elyria, Ohio to the late George F. and Orsea Dorothy (DeWitt) Sayers. <br><br>He grew up in the Elyria/Lorain area and received an associate degree from the Lorain County Community College. He worked as a construction estimator for Lee Wilson Fabricators, then J.R. Construction both of Elyria, Ohio. He then worked for Adena Construction in Mansfield before retiring from Corna/Kokosing of Columbus, Ohio. <br><br>Merle proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. <br><br>He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ashland. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, woodworking, and anything outdoors.<br><br>On October 19, 1963, Merle married the love of his life, Kay M. Gibson in a union lasting 58 years. <br><br>He is survived by his wife, Kay M. Sayers of Ashland, two sons, Jeff A. (Kim) Sayers of Shreve and Ron M. Sayers of Greenville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Isobella, Mason, and Collin; a sister, Sally A. Sayers of Ashland and a daughter-in-law, Kim LaFever of Greenville, N.C.<br><br>A Celebration of Life Service will be held this coming Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Allan Bevere and the Rev. Thomas Snyder officiating. Private family interment will be in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service, 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday. The Ashland Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military honors at the funeral home. <br><br>The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 220 Sandusky Street, Ashland, Ohio 44805 or to Lifecare Hospice, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, Ohio 44691.<br><br>For those not able to attend, condolences may be made to the family by visiting denbowfh.com<br><br>Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home in honored to serve the family of Merle R. Merle R. Sayers, 84, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 27, 2022, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
