Thomas W. McNamara

Thomas Walter McNamara of Bethesda, MD died on April 02, 2016 of natural causes. He was 87 years old. Tom was born on August 17, 1928 in the Fort Hamilton section of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY to Thomas W. and Jane (Lyle) McNamara. He attended St. Patrick's Elementary and St. Michael's High School. Tom enlisted in the US Army out of high school. On his 18th birthday in 1946 he landed in Tokyo, Japan. After his first enlistment ended in 1948, he attended Niagara University, graduating with a degree in Economics. He served as an officer in the Army from 1952-1954, during the Korean War, stationed in Japan. He retired as a Captain after an additional ten years' service in the Army Reserves. He attended Syracuse University from 1954 to 1955, where he earned a Master's Degree in Education and met Elizabeth Lynch, whom he wed in 1957. Tom taught school in Catskill, New York from 1955-56. In 1956 he was offered a position in Washington, DC as a Management Intern at the Children's Bureau, now part of HHS Administration for Children and Families He continued as a budget analyst at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare as it reorganized into the Department of Education. He retired in 1988. He and his wife attended St. Jane Frances de Chantal parish and raised a family of four boys and three girls in Bethesda, MD. His interests included nature conservation efforts, gardening, history, and reading. Tom is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; children John (Andrea Chamblee), Jane, Charles (Jan Donohoe), Mary, Daniel (Christine Scheckton), and Peggy (Justin Pyles), as well as seven grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brother, the Rev. Charles McNamara, C.M.; and son Thomas. In lieu of flowers the family requests that gifts be made in Tom's memory to St. John's College High School, 2607 Military Road, NW, Washington, DC 20015.
