Elvera Jane Cindea Obituary

Elvera Jane Cindea, age 91, of Canton, passed away on Tuesday March 15, 2022.

Elvera was born November 27, 1930 in Freedom, Ohio to the late Ralph and Helena (Knopf) Fosdick. She attended J.J. Burns Elementary and graduated from McKinley High School in 1949.

Elvera married her sweetheart Virgil on August 9, 1952 at First Christian Church. Virg and his “Tootsie” shared a lifetime of love and adventures, and were married for 67 years. They loved attending football games and class reunions at McKinley, their alma mater. With their two daughters, the family enjoyed countless fishing trips.

She began her career as a secretary at the Timken Roller Bearing Company in 1949 and later worked for Lowry Lithograph Company, retiring in 1992. For over 20 years she worked for the Canton Recreation Department as a ladies exercise and volleyball class leader at Madge Youtz and Mason Schools, and volunteered for over 50 years at First Christian Church in the pre-school departments.

An enthusiastic athlete, she bowled, played Class A Volleyball, and was a member of the Canton YMCA Roadrunner Club. She ran every day, competing in many half marathons. Elvera enjoyed baking cookies, crocheting, knitting, and planting flowers, but she especially loved fishing with her husband and children.

Elvera cherished her family and many friends, and was always ready for an excursion, willing to put everything on pause—including baking—to go out to lunch. She had an infectious, caring personality and was devoted to her children and grandchildren, attending scores of band concerts, art shows, dance recitals, musicals, softball games, and ceremonies, always with a proud smile.

A prolific card sender, she never skipped a holiday or life event, and once you were on her list your birthday was never forgotten. Her wonderful smile, curly perm, and open, delighted interest in the lives of her family and friends will be dearly missed.

Elvera is survived by daughters Vicki (Michael) Smith of Wadsworth, Nancy (Michael) Greenbaum of Hartville; grandchildren Lauren Smith of Missoula, Montana, Megan Smith of Perrysburg, Eric Smith of Wadsworth, Hannah Greenbaum of Hartville; her namesake great-granddaughter Vera Marlida Buckley of Hartville; brothers-in-law Emil (Carolyn) Cindea; Earl (Geraldine) Cindea; and Nick (Doreena) Cindea; and many nieces and nephews across the country.

Preceded in death by husband Virgil; siblings Richard (Donna Aderholt) Fosdick, Grace (Homer) Duell; and nephew Jeffrey Duell.

Special thanks to all the staff at Danbury Senior Living of Massillon and Elara Caring Hospice for their compassion and support of Elvera and Virgil.
