Obituary

On Tuesday, March 1st, 2022, after a long and full life, Wayne Maynor passed away in a Charleston hospital following a brief illness.

Nearing his 89th year, Wayne Dale Maynor was born on March 23rd, 1933, at Maynor.  He was the second of five children born to Homer Fairbanks and Annie Elmo Miller Maynor.

Wayne’s early years were spent at Sandlick.  He was a 1950 graduate of Trap Hill School, and a US Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict.  After returning home, Wayne eventually began a long career with C&P Telephone, retiring after 30 plus years of service.

On June 7th, 1957, he married the love of his life Betty Mae Brooks.  To their union was born their two children, Jeffrey Wayne, and Susan Lynn.  Wayne and Betty were lifelong residents of Beckley devoted to each other and their children.   They enjoyed a long life together, with many travels and interests, among them square dancing and bowling.   After retirement, they became snowbirds in Florida.  On April 2nd, 2007, after 49 years of marriage, Betty passed away, and now, “Oh Glad Reunion.”  Although deeply hurt, Wayne kept a positive attitude, enjoying traveling with his children and their families though out the United States.  He enjoyed fishing and “never met a stranger.”  An ardent fan of the AAU basketball team, the Beckley Wizards, Wayne was the “Papaw to the team.” It is of great comfort to his family that he so enjoyed life and the adventures it had to offer.

Left to cherish his memory is his devoted family, son, Jeffrey Maynor, and his wife, Myrna; daughter, Susan Keen, and her husband, Terry.  He was the proud Papaw of Jessica Heis and her husband, Daniel and Cody Maynor.  Wayne was the great-grandfather of Branson Heis.   He was the fond brother of Vernon Maynor (Ave) of Mt. Lookout, Jean Cook of Beckley, Ginger Owen, and Bonnie Lester both of Suffolk, Virginia.  Wayne looked forward to Sunday dinners at sister, Jean’s house and he was blessed to have several nieces and nephews and held a special bond with Jean’s son, David Cook.

This Saturday, March 5th, at 1:00 pm there will be a “Service of Remembrance” in the Melton Mortuary Chapel.  The Rev. Dewey Lowe will be officiating.   The family will receive friends at 11:00 am.   Wayne will be laid to rest beside his beloved Betty in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.  Terry Keen, Jeff and Cody Maynor, Daniel Heis, David Cook, and Pat Richards will carry Wayne to his final rest.  Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Cook and Sam Johnson.

Our father was such a blessing to us and our families.  We shall never forget him.   God speed…..
