Harriet Ann (Clark) Moore passed away on February 22, 2022. The daughter of Arnold and Hilda (Murphy) Clark, Harriet was born in Keyser, WV and was raised and lived in Westernport, MD. She is the proud big sister to one brother, Bill, born when she was seventeen years old; he basically grew up with her children.

Harriet is survived by her husband Carl and seven children. Sons Ron and Derek live in Pittsburgh and Florida, respectively. Their five daughters live in the local area – Nancy Shingler, Angela McKenzie, Jennifer Hickey, Kerry Fazenbaker and Heidi Moore. They are the grandparents of twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Nothing pleased her more than spending time with her family, vacationing at the beach, raising their two cats Mittens and Shadow and making family memories.

Harriet developed an abiding love of history during her days at St. Peter’s Elementary School in Westernport. Following graduation from Bruce High School, she attended the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Cumberland, MD. St. Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine was the source of a BS degree with a major in Management of which she completed years later while raising a family.

Her career as a Registered Nurse began at Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser, WV. Throughout her 25 years working in the medical field, she worked in all of the fields of nursing at one time or another, enjoying the years spent working in surgery the most. The last ten years were spent in nursing/hospital administration.

What started in 1995 as a few days to straighten out her family tree ended up in a second “career” – volunteering at the Genealogical Society of Allegany County. In this capacity, she staffed their Library, located in the Appalachian Collection of the Allegany College of Maryland, weekly and has served as a Board Member, Treasurer and President at various times. As the editor of their quarterly newsletter, The Old Pike Post, since 1997, she has done a prodigious amount of research on the families and history of Allegany County and the surrounding areas. Other writing/research credits include the Allegany Magazine and the Journal of the Alleghenies, as well as legal research.

Harriet has been the Secretary of the Evergreen Heritage Center Foundation since its inception. Other spare time pursuits, in addition to the family, have involved participation in the administration of their church and the Bruce Alumni Association, the Daughters of the American Revolution and belonging to a number of local historical organizations. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Piedmont, WV.

As Clarence says in her favorite movie, It’s A Wonderful Life, “Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives.  And when he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?”

Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport on Friday, February 25th from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Saturday, February 26th at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Bart Thompson officiating.

Interment will be at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.
