Nancy N. Wood June 1, 1940 - January 29, 2017 Clinton-Nancy Newell Wood, 76, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2017. Nancy was born June 1, 1940 in Danville, Virginia to the late W.A. Newell and Charlotte Wilkins Newell. She was wife of the late Kirby Whitford Wood, Jr. and was preceded in death by a step-son, Steve Wood; and five brothers. Nancy worked many years with Roses Department Store and later with her late husband, Kirby, delivered newspapers for the Kinston Free Press. Following her move to be near her daughter, Heather, she found great reward in helping others as a volunteer with hospice. Known as "Nena" to her beloved grandchildren, Nancy has been described as fiercely independent, strong willed and for the most part hard-headed. Her wonderful sense of humor brought smiles to all she came in contact with. She was fiercely proud of her family and loved supporting Heather, Hailey and Grace in all their endeavors. Nancy was a longtime member of White Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church and since moving loved to serve her Lord at Dobson Chapel Baptist Church. Nothing was better to Nancy than the smooth sounds of Elvis Presley. A service to celebrate and honor Nancys life will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 11 a.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with Pastor David Willis officiating. Entombment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park. Nancy is survived by her daughter, Heather Sheffield and fiancee, Robert Ness; two grandchildren, Hailey Sheffield and Grace Sheffield; and a step-daughter, Denise Wood.
