C. Norman Gustafson Obituary

C. Norman Gustafson – Former POW C. Norman Gustafson died yesterday at the age of 99. Born in Plainfield and a resident of Fanwood and Scotch Plains for many years. He was employed by Citi Bank in New York City for 43 years and retired as an Assistant Vice President and Account Manager. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps for three years as a part of 384th Bomb Group Eighth Air Force was shot down in April 1944 on his 17th mission becoming a POW for 13 months. Military citations included POW medal, Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters and he is the recipient of New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster for combat over Europe. In June 2017 he received the French Legion Officer Medal for his participation in the liberating of France, presented at the French Embassy in New York City. He was a member of the Chapter One, American Ex POW’s, VFW, Stalag 17 and 384th Bomb Group. As a member of Fanwood Presbyterian Church he served as trustee and usher. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Elizabeth, one daughter Patricia Rossignol and husband Dr. Jean Francois of St. Petersburg Florida; two son’s Robert and wife Helen, Barry and wife Joan, His grandchildren Jennifer Gustafson, Teresa (Max) Gustafson and Michelle (Dr. Chris) Deoliveira. A Memorial service will be held as the Fanwood Presbyterian Church on February 19, 2022 at 1130AM. Arrangements are by the Memorial Funeral Home, Fanwood.
