Bertha E. "Betsy" Gates Obituary

Mrs. Bertha E. "Betsy" (Newman) Gates, 89, formerly of 807 Anthony Ave., Waynesboro, PA passed Friday, September 9, 2016 in Quincy Village Nursing Home. Born August 29, 1927 in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Clark L. and Carrie J. (Gossard) Newman. She was a lifelong resident of the Waynesboro area. Mrs. Gates was a graduate of Waynesboro High School with the Class of 1945. She and her husband, the late Mr. Samuel Milton Gates, were married August 6, 1949 in Waynesboro. They moved to their Anthony Ave. address in 1969. Mr. Gates passed away October 7, 2002. In her early life, Mrs. Gates was employed at Landis Machine Company, Waynesboro from 1945-1951. She later was employed part time in the mail room and at the Record Herald, Waynesboro. Mrs. Gates was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren. Mrs. Gates is survived by five children, Ava Marie Miller of Martinsburg WV, Samuel W. Gates and his wife, Leesa of Waynesboro, Susan A. Robinson and her husband, Don of Huntingtown, MD, Michael A. Gates and Beth Papperiella of Hagerstown, MD and Sharon A. Gates of South Mountain, PA; seven grandchildren; one step-grandson; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was the last of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Rhoda A. Newman, Ava C. Peters and Alice J. Phenicie; and five brothers, Daniel L. Newman, John T. Newman, Clark L. Newman, Joseph F. Newman and Carl N. Newman. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 14, 2016, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 South Broad Street, Waynesboro with Rev. Mark Shover officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services, Wednesday morning, in the funeral home.
