William Dana Morton Sr. Obituary

William Dana Morton, Sr. passed away on January 25, 2022 just a couple weeks short of his 90th birthday at Prisma Health Tuomey.  He was born in Quincy, MA to the late Dana Fletcher Morton and Grace Duncan Morton on February 10, 1932.  As a young adult, he joined the Navy and served two tours aboard the Battleship USS Missouri (BB-63) during the Korean War. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he married the love of his life, Mildred Ann Chibirka and they had three children.

His dislike of the cold weather and love of the sea took him to Key West, FL where he became the Captain of a Commercial Shrimp Trawler for 16 years. He later moved to South Carolina and started a successful residential painting and wallpapering company which he ran until retiring at the age of 75. He was an active member of the USS Missouri (BB-63) Association, holding many executive offices including that of President. His shipmates were his friends as well as his extended family. He loved to tell “sea stories” of his adventures in the Navy and aboard the shrimp trawler.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mildred, son William Dana Morton, Jr., sister Joan and niece Laurie Dimattio. He is survived by his daughter Debra Morton Jordan of Sumter, son Robert Morton and wife Mary of Maryland, daughter-in-law Laurie Morton, son-in-law Ace Jordan, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three nieces, and numerous great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank all the employees on the Oncology floor as well as Tuomey Hospice for the kind and compassionate care they showed to our Dad during his last days.

Due to Covid 19, a memorial service will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the USS Missouri (BB-63) Association Scholarship Fund at 102 Wakefield Circle, East Hartford, CT 06118 in memory of Bill Morton, Sr.
