Ruth E. Learned Obituary

Ruth E. Learned, 90, of Topsfield, MA died peacefully on January 22, 2022.
She was the loving wife of John F. Learned with whom she shared 65 years of blessed marriage.

Born in Malden to the late Ralph E. and Marion (Perkins) Eaton. Her sisters Virginia Meuse and Dorothy Campbell and her brother Ralph Eaton predeceased Ruth.

Ruth worked as a bank teller/administrator prior to having children at which time she devoted herself to being a full time mother. Once the children were in school she picked up working in banking and later moved into insurance. She worked for Electric Insurance Company until she retired in 1993.

Ruth was very talented at sewing, knitting, crocheting and needlepoint. She created many wonderful gifts for family, friends and many other neighbors: Christmas stockings, sweaters, scarves and needlepoint artwork, to name a few. Ruth loved spending time with her immediate family and grandsons as well as her extended family: siblings, nieces and nephews. Everyone remembers eating Ruth’s delicious baked cookies and cakes.

She enjoyed days at Crane’s beach, downhill skiing at King’s Ridge, camping at Papoose Pond, square dancing, bicycle riding and RV travels to Florida in the winter. Most of all she delighted spending time at their oceanfront vacation home in Maine. She and John visited many lighthouses, camped near Acadia National Park, and viewed the other local sites. Through the years many family members on vacation joined Ruth and John in Maine enjoying lobster bakes and fresh baked blueberry pies.

In addition to her husband John, Ruth leaves her sons Lawrence Learned and his wife Martha, Wayne Learned and his wife Acacia; daughter Susan Perkins and her husband Kevin; grandchildren Trevor and Kyle Perkins, as well as many close family members and friends.

Ruth’s family express sincere thanks to all the care professionals who have provided excellent assistance to Ruth through the years including Topsfield’s Council on Aging and EMT’s, Senior Care, Beverly Hospital and more recently, Sharon, Ledgewood Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center and Care Dimensions Hospice. Contributions may be made in Ruth’s name to Ledgewood Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center.

Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, January 31st at St. Rose of Lima Church in Topsfield. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Visiting hours at the Campbell Funeral Home 525 Cabot St. Beverly, Sunday January 30th from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Information, directions, condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com .
