Ray Amos

Ray Amos, 85, of Murphy passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at his residence. He was a native of Murphy and had lived a short time in Atlanta, Georgia before returning home to Murphy. Ray worked as an inspector on the C5-A program for Lockheed while living in Atlanta. Ray began working for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department in 1975 until retiring in 1998. He was the first deputy to receive full retirement with Cherokee County much of which was due to his ability to work well with both political parties. Ray drove a bus for Cherokee County Schools for over 20 years. Ray continued to work alongside his family at Amos Refrigeration for the past 15 years up until his death. Ray was a lifelong member of Hanging Dog Baptist Church. He was a loving grandfather to his grandkids and great-grandkids and was a huge supporter of all they did. Ray enjoyed spending time at the casinos, the dog and horse tracks, and enjoyed trading and bartering on cars. He was the son of the late Fred Lee and Genetta Palmer Amos and the husband of the late Peggie McKinney Amos, who died November 11, 2002. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Don Amos. Surviving are four daughters, Donna Marroni and husband, Michael of Williamsport, Tennessee, Kelley Conley and husband, Eric of Orlando, Florida, Nyki Klare and husband, Bill of Murphy, and Mina Ryan and husband, Dennis of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; two sons, Art Amos, and Jimmy Amos and wife, Mandi, all of Murphy; a sister, Kathryn Mills of Murphy; 11 grandchildren, Evan Marroni, Amanda and Zachary Amos, Savannah Hardin, Shaunan Conley, Niki Roberson, Samantha Mockus, Dylan and Cody Ryan, and Brady and Xander Graves; eight great-grandchildren, Mason and Carson Lovingood, Noah Hardin, Maddox and Bryce Roberson, Sloan Conley, Madison Baker, and Christopher Ryan; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 1:00 pm Thursday, January 27, 2022 at Hanging Dog Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Swain officiating. The interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Evan Marroni, Zachary Amos, Brady Graves, Xander Graves, Matt Emerick, and Adam Hardin. The family received friends from 11 am-12:50 pm Thursday at the Hanging Dog Baptist Church prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Ray Amos to the Hanging Dog Baptist Church, 3522 Hanging Dog Road, Murphy, NC 28906.
