Sarah E. Schiavone Polites, 94, of West Side Scranton, passed peacefully on Saturday at the Celebration Villa of Mid-Valley. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and best friend of 51 years Nicholas, who passed away in 2001.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Salvatore and Mary Altieri Schiavone. Sarah was a devout Catholic and was proud of St. Lucy’s Church where she was part of the Junior and then Senior Altar and Rosary Societies. She was a Registered Nurse and nursing supervisor at the old State Hospital in Scranton. Later Sarah worked with her husband in the Liberty Restaurant, a famous West Side restaurant. Sarah was a remarkable and very talented person. She loved to crochet, bake and entertain. She was an excellent cook and hostess. Sarah was known for her get-togethers, especially at the lake property. Sarah adopted James Polites and later helped raise her grandson, Nicholas with whom she was very close.
Sarah had a great sense of humor and a great heart who was always ready and willing to help anyone. Sarah had a commanding presence and always let you know her thoughts and if she agreed or disagreed with you. Sarah was an avid reader.
Sarah is survived by her sister Rose Rizzo, Scranton; sister-in-law Nancy Schiavone, Lake Winola; brother-in-law Peter Polites, Scranton; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by son James; grandson Nicholas; brothers Joseph and John Schiavone; sister Ann Marie Patel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on FRIDAY January 28, 2022 at 10:00 am at St. Lucy's Church, 949 Scranton St., Scranton, PA. Friends may call from 9:00 am to 10:00 am in the church. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to St. Lucy’s Church, 949 Scranton St., Scranton, PA 18504.
