Porter Eugene "Gene" Sawyer
Porter Eugene (Gene) Sawyer passed away on December 26, 2021 in Wellington, Kansas. Mr Sawyer was born July 15, 1929 in Caldwell, Kansas to Robert Porter Sawyer and Myrtle Io Snowden Sawyer. As a youth he spent his years in both Kansas and Oklahoma. He was a graduate of Blackwell High School, Blackwell, Oklahoma. He also attended Cowley County Junior College, Phillips University, and Manhattan Christian College. On May 29, 1952, he married his beloved Helen Louise Boody in Enid, Oklahoma. Over the years, his interests included being a Sunday School teacher; Boy Scout leader; a Church Elder; School Bus Driver, for South Haven USD #509; a Garage Tinkering Hoarder: and Volunteer Firefighter, where he was Chief for the South Haven, Kansas fire department. His professional field included electrician and appliance repairman working for various companies as well as himself. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Helen Louise Boody Sawyer, of Wellington, Kansas. Four children: Charles (Loveda) Sawyer, Miles City MT; Robert Sawyer, Hutchinson, KS; David (Yvonne) Sawyer, Hutchinson, KS; Linda (Rick) Evans, Yates Center, KS. 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren with one on the way. Also surviving are Dale Boody and Jack Garrison (both brother-in-law), and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Iris Queen Sawyer Garrison, Portia Lena Sawyer Ross. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 1, 2022 in South Haven, KS. Location will be announced at a later date. A memorial fund has been established with First Christian Church Air Conditioning Fund, 123 W. 9th Street, Wellington, KS 67152.
