Jan Marie Burns Gardiner, Maine Obituary

Jan Marie Burns

PITTSTON - Jan Marie (Swallow) Burns, 62, passed away in her home December 23, 2021, after her battle with cancer. She was born in Houlton on July 9, 1959, the daughter of Donald (Pat) and Gloria (Christensen) Swallow. She grew up in Houlton, where she graduated from Houlton High School. She had a knack for real estate and spent most of her life as a self-employed building owner. Because of her self-employed status, she was able to do what she enjoyed most—helping others. One of her biggest accomplishments was the Freedom Center in Dresden. She founded the Center in order to help people overcome addiction, recover from trauma, and commit their lives to the Lord. She loved the Lord with all her heart and spent her life ministering to others. She cherished her time spent with her kids, grandchildren, many friends, and her Labradoodle Sophie. She is survived by her two sons, Chris and his wife Lauren McNinch, and Cory and his wife Carri Burns; daughter, Cara Burns; two grandchildren, Parker and Peyton McNinch; two siblings, Doug and his wife Patty Swallow, and Sue (Swallow) and her husband Tim Callnan. And several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Donald (Pat) and Gloria (Christensen) Swallow; and sister, Lana (Swallow) Cutting. Jan was a free spirit, and has requested no service be held, but instead her ashes be spread so she could fly with the wind. Arrangements are entrusted with Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the Staples Funeral Home website: www.familyfirstfuneralhomes.com In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Harold Alfond Cancer Center, MaineGeneral Health, Office of Philanthropy, PO Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903.
