Patra Kavadas Obituary

Patra Kavadas, 93 of Follansbee, WV died peacefully on Sunday, December 5, 2021 surrounded by her beloved family. Patra was born, Cleopatra Monaxious, on the magical Greek Island of Rhodes to the late Nikolas and Anastasia (Yiameou) Monaxious. She is the third of seven children. She is preceded in death by her brother, Michael, and three sisters, Maria, Pepena and Dimitra. She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Pete (Kim) Kavadas of New Philadelphia, OH; John (Missy) Kavadas of Carrollton, OH; and was fondly known as YiaYia to her three grandsons, Matthew Kavadas, Zachary Denham & Jacob Kopko. As a child of the Great Depression, the Nazi occupation of Greece and the great famine, her family endured great hardships including the death of ther mother while she was just a young girl. She and all her sisters were then sent to different countries all around the world. She immigrated to the US in 1949, married Mike Kavadas and remained married to him for 47 years until his passing in 1996. She overcame adversity, learned three languages, Greek, Italian and English and worked hard cleaning homes and offices all her life until the age of 90. She was a strong woman who lived a very independent life for nine decades. As a lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Steubenville, her faith in the Lord guided her throughout her life. She never missed morning or evening prayer for anyone who crossed her empathetic heart. She cared deeply for all she loved, always sacrificing herself, often going without in order to provide for the needs of others. After being separated for more than two decades, she was able to travel back to Rhodes to meet up with all of her siblings and then a few times since then. She spoke with them several times a week and had a special fondness for her nieces, Stacy and Yionna. She is also survived by her brother, Dimitrias (Panagiota) Monoxios, her sister Rhea and her 15 nieces & nephews and their families. She was loved and will be sadly missed by friends and family especially Donald Hildreth, who was like a son to her, the Kohelis Family, Diane Macedonia, the DiBattista Family, friends at the Brooke County Senior Center and all who fondly remember coming for a visit to have their “cup reading”. She was one of a kind and a true blessing to all. Visitation for Patra will be held on Friday, December 10, 2021, from 4:00 – 8:00 pm with a Trisagion Service at 7:00 pm at the Mullenbach Funeral Home 669 Main St. Follansbee, WV 26037. The Funeral Service for Patra will be held at 9:00 am with Father Matthew Moore officiating at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 300 S. 4th St. Steubenville, OH 43952. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Follansbee, WV. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
