Charles Franklin Hewes, III Obituary

Charlotte, North Carolina An extra tall, proud U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, loving and faithful husband, talented contractor, a creative woodworker, and a most honorable and unpretentious man, Charles Franklin Hewes, III, died at his home in the presence of his cherished wife, Brenda, of complications from Ingestive Pneumonia on December 5, 2021. Born October 26, 1934, in Bessemer City, NC to Charles Franklin Hewes, Jr. and Ola Maude Kincaid, where he grew up enjoying the companionship of his Falls and Kincaid cousins, Charles was preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved Grandmothers, Georgia Stroup Kincaid of Bessemer City, NC and Elizabeth Guffy Hewes of Lansdale, Pennsylvania. After graduation from Bessemer City High School, Charles served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953-1957. He studied Forestry at the University of Georgia, spending his summer breaks as a Timber Cruiser and Forest-Fire Fighter for the U.S. Forest Service. On November 23, 1963, Charles married Brenda Carolyn Penley in Gastonia, NC. The newly married couple relocated to South Carolina where Charles was the Timber Manager for Drexel Furniture Company, and then District Timber Manager for Georgia Pacific. He returned to North Carolina to become a Right-of-Way Agent for the City of Charlotte, NC, and built a home there. Doing all the building himself led to the establishment of Hewes Construction, his business until retirement. Charles loved to travel, and the Hewes tent-camped across over 25 American states and Canadian provinces. An avid outdoor-man, he especially loved hunting quail. He was also very proud of his acquired culinary skills, especially his “world famous” coffee mix, pimento cheese, and Bear Valley Spaghetti Sauce. The ultimate Luddite, he abhorred modern technology, but he loved to read, especially the Wall Street Journal and Western novels. He had a repertoire of life experiences he loved to share, and re-share, with friends and family. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Penley Hewes, several of his loving cousins, and treasured in-laws. Brenda wishes to express her appreciation to Atrium Carolinas Medical Center Progressive Unit and ICU nurses and staff, for the excellent quality of care Charles received. Also, a special thank you for the generous assistance of loving neighbors Joel and Julie Smith, cousins Millie, Billy, Jackie, special friend Mary, most especially Jane, the matchmaker, and brother-in-law, Charles and his wife, Sharon. A Memorial Service will be held at McLean Funeral Directors, 700 South New Hope Road, Gastonia, NC 28054, December 9, 2021 at 11:00am, officiated by Rev. Charles C. Penley, Jr. His family requests that masks be worn for the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, 6500 South New Hope Rd., Belmont, NC 28012, or a charity of your choice.
