Deloise Odom Obituary

In Loving Memory of Deloise Odom Long time Anchorage, Alaska resident and community member Deloise Odom was called home Saturday, November 20, 2021 at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska. She was the first-born to parents Leoney Stewart Fuqua and Dudley Fuqua on September 28, 1948 in Magnolia, Mississippi. She was deeply loved and her memory will be cherished by many.   Deloise graduated from Eva Gordon High School with the class of 1968. She continued her education and received her Associates of Arts in General Theology at Prentiss Institute, Prentiss, Mississippi, in 1970 and finished her studies with a Bachelors of Arts in Education from University of Alaska Anchorage in 1972. She started her career teaching secondary education in the Anchorage School District, and in 1975 she began working for the State of Alaska, Department of Labor in the Job Services department. In her job capacity she helped mentor and assisted hundreds of people with training and gaining employment.  She remained a dedicated employee, servicing the community until her retirement on July 1, 2004. As a youth Deloise sang in the choir at New Star Baptist Church in Magnolia, Mississippi. On June 6, 1970 Deloise married the love of her life, Dr. Javis L. Odom, and they remained married for 48 years until his passing in 2019. After moving to Anchorage, the family became active members of Shiloh Baptist Church where Deloise was a dedicated church member and was involved in many church activities including singing in the choir and deaconess board.  In 1996, she and her husband Javis embarked on a life of ministry together and founded Turning Point Community Church, Inc., where she exemplified as a true anchor and helpmate to her husband's calling. She remained a dedicated and faithful First Lady, leader and servant of the Most High God until her death. She was devoted to her passion for the Lord, the church and her family. Deloise will truly be missed by her family, church family, friends, coworkers, and the entire community of Anchorage. Deloise leaves to cherish her memory and will be deeply missed by her five grandchildren Jaydell, Kaleb, Arianna, Hezikiah and Nyla; siblings: Gillis (Shantel) Fuqua, Carruth Fuqua, James (Dianne) Stewart, Donnis (Rick) Henderson, Delbert Wayne (April) Robinson, Wanda Robinson and Russell (Patricia) Stewart all of Anchorage Alaska; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Javis L. Odom; daughter Natasha L. Odom-Cain; mother Leoney Stewart Fuqua; father Dudley Fuqua; sister Edna Jean Cockerham and brothers Dudley Fuqua, Jr and Donald Stewart; her grandparents Ellen Carmel and Nathaniel Stewart; Uncles: Joe, Marshall, and Nathaniel Stewart Jr.; Aunts Mattie Robinson, Bernice McEwen and Lucille Stewart. Deloise trusted God completely and was a woman of faith. She was selfless, kind and giving. She was a great example of a woman of God and her legacy will live on.  Her Homegoing services will be held on Friday, December 3, 2021, Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Anchorage, at 11:00 am; and Livestreamed through https://livestream.com/accounts/2454916/events /2352870?fbclid=IwAR3RcgtGnSQ_LOxtnOj_J4mCUt7jA c-6u-EeZC13tMgF8ZfXl4-92JhSQOw.  All flowers and correspondence should be sent to Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 855 E. 20th Ave., Anchorage, Alaska 99501.
