Kittery Point, Maine- Joseph F. Carven Jr., 82 passed away Saturday, November 27, 2021. He was born February 28, 1939 in Weymouth, MA, son of the late Joseph F. and Elizabeth (Healey) Carven Sr. For over 60 years he was married to Ann C. (O’Brien) Carven who passed away on September 11th of this year. 

Joe was a graduate of Bowdoin College where he was two-time captain of the sailing team. Joe also played football and was captain his senior year. That same year he was selected to the All Maine and All New England teams as a guard. Joe was the recipient of the Reardon Trophy given to the player who has made outstanding contributions to his team and college as a man of honor, courage, and leadership. 


Joe went on to teach and coach football at Portsmouth High School and Haverhill High School where he also became the athletic director and vice principal. He then went on to coach at the college level as Merrimack College’s first head football coach. 
Joe was an avid sailer racing Thistles, Indians, 210’s, and Hustlers. He was extremely competitive, never entering a race or game that he did not think he was going to win.


He leaves 3 sons, Joseph F. Carven III and his wife Julie of Amesbury, MA, Timothy W. Carven and his wife Sybil of Kittery Point, ME and James M. Carven and his companion June of South Hampton, NH; 3 sisters Elizabeth Gallagher, Carol Mathisen and her husband John, and Virginia Doyle and her husband Mike; 4 granddaughters Molly-Kate, Abigail, Caroline and Sarah; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother William Carven. 


A time of visitation will be held from 12 noon to 1:30pm on Friday, December 3rd in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York, Maine. A funeral Mass will be Celebrated at 2pm in St. Christopher Church, 4 Barrell Lane, York, Maine. Interment will follow in the First Parish Cemetery, York, Maine.
