Germaine J Monahan Hudson, Michigan Obituary

Germaine J Monahan

Hudson - Germaine “Geri” Julia Monahan, age 70, of Hudson, Michigan, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, November 28, 2021, in the house she had called home since 1986. She was born in Hudson in 1951, the daughter of Verl and Dorothy Esterline, and lived there her entire life. In high school, she began working at the Bi-County Herald in Hudson, where she eventually built a career spanning six decades. There, she met her future husband, Bud Monahan, who owned the advertising newspaper. The two married in 1986. Geri eventually became a co-owner of the company after Bud’s death in 2007. Geri was an insatiably hard worker throughout her life, and a fierce advocate for her husband during his later illnesses. Elderly family members often remarked, “If I ever fall ill, I hope I have someone like Geri fighting for me.” When her own illness came in 2016 in the form of ovarian cancer, she and her son Charles planted pear trees at their shared home as a sign that life would persevere and thrive even amidst adversity. For nearly six more years, she continued to keep busy with gardening, canning, baking, knitting Christmas stockings for every new member of her extended family, and joyously singing to her two dogs, Maisie and Hugo. She will be remembered by all who knew her for her humor, her compassion, and her indomitable spirit. She is survived by her two sons, Michael (Laura Vandersteen) Brockway of Farmington, Michigan, and Charles Monahan of Hudson, Michigan; her sister, Christine (James) Rickner of Hudson, Michigan; her friend and cousin Ian (Bonny) Parsons of Knoxville, Tennessee; and the many stepchildren, step-grandchildren, and beloved step-great-grandchildren that she had the joy of calling her own through her happy marriage to Bud. She was preceded in death by husband, John “Bud” William Monahan V in 2007; her father Verl Esterline in 1987; and her mother, Dorothy (Rohlan) Esterline in 1990. Visitation for Geri will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with a Rosary being prayed at 7:30 p.m. at Eagle-Marry Funeral Home, Hudson. The funeral mass will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson with Fr. Todd Koenigsknecht as celebrant. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery. You may send condolences to the family at www.eaglemarryfuneralhome.com. Memorial Contributions may be given to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or to Hospice of Lenawee. Arrangements have been entrusted to Eagle-Marry Funeral Home, Hudson.
