John M. Powell
John M. Powell, age 77, of West Peoria, passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2021 at OSF St. Francis in Peoria. John was born on October 25, 1944 in Peoria, the son of James and Gladys (Strassburger) Powell. He married Diane Dailey on November 21, 1973. She survives. Also surviving is his sister, Jackie Gard of Elmwood, IL and his brother, Daniel Powell of Scottsdale, AZ. John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jim and Jerry Powell and his sister, Joanne Svymbersky. He graduated Holy Family Grade School and Richwoods High School in 1962. He was the chairman of many of the 1962 Richwoods Reunions. In 1967, John graduated from Bradley University with a degree in Business Finance. John worked in computer equipment sales for IBM and Storage Technology Corp, achieving many awards for his salesmanship. Later, he enjoyed working for a friend, managing the construction of convenience stores and gas stations. He also worked for Plattner Orthopedics, prior to retirement. John was a former member of St. Mark’s catholic Church. He served as Parish Trustee and Chairman of the Finance Committee, as well as many other Parish committees. He was currently a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in downtown Peoria. He also served as a Trustee of the West Peoria Township. John loved golf and golfed regularly with his two good friends, John and Mike. He loved life to the fullest. He would say “There are no problems in life, just opportunities!” Visitation will be from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Funeral Mass will be at 9:30 AM on Friday, December 3, 2021 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peoria, with a half hour prior visitation. Fr. William Miller will officiate and Entombment will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum.
