Naomi Potter Urban Obituary

Naomi Potter Urban, 91, passed away on 24 November 2021. Naomi, the daughter of J. Robbie Potter and Emily Lewis Potter, was born and raised in the Senora community in Lancaster County, Virginia. Following her marriage, she and her husband George William Urban, Jr., lived a full life together for 72 years in the Kilmarnock area until George died in November last year. Naomi and George lived in the Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury Retirement Community in Irvington, VA during their last years. Naomi is survived by her most loving and grateful family: children Shelia (John) Bareham, Regenia (Mac) McClain, and GW (Debbie) Urban III, as well as her grandchildren Emily (Rob) Reader and Stephen (Kristen) Harding, Carrie (Herbert) Rieder and Will McClain, and Gretchen and Kelle Urban. She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren: Anna Katharine and Caroline Ping, and Kelsey and Ryan Reader; Trey, Alex, and Kate Harding; Erik and Miriam Rieder; and Summer Urban. She was pre-deceased by her husband George W. Urban, Jr., her sisters Faye Bryant, Morgan Sanford, Mary Bryant, Virginia Stevens, and her brothers Lewis Potter, Franklin Potter, and R. J. Potter. Naomi was engaged with our community. She worshipped at Kilmarnock Baptist Church. Until her youngest child started school Naomi raised their children at home. Later she worked in Kilmarnock’s N&P Style Shop and La Vogue. In the early 1980s, George & Naomi bought Ed’s Country Store in Mollusk, VA, and lived in the house attached to the back of the store. Naomi ran the store and George continued his work as a barber. From 1985 to 1993, Naomi and Debbie Urban, GW’s wife, owned and operated The Children’s Shop on North Main Street in Kilmarnock. MeMaw/Nanny was truly loved as the matriarch of the extended Urban family. She lived a long, full life during which she received an abundance of love and respect from not only her large family but also from her many friends and neighbors. A service to celebrate her life will be held 11:00 a. m. Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, Va.. Memorials may be made to the Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury Foundation. The family is deeply grateful to the staff of Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury who gave Naomi excellent care.
