Barbara J. Decker Obituary

Barbara Jean Decker, age 82, of Lake Ann, formerly of Onaway, died at her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Lake Ann on Wednesday November 24, 2021. The daughter of Arnold and Helen (Jarvis) Vermilya, Barb was born in Onaway on May 19, 1939. She married Gary L. Decker at St. Paul Catholic Church in Onaway on December 26, 1959. They were blessed with 60 years of marriage at the time of Gary’s death in 2019. A lifelong resident of Onaway, Barb made her career in nursing. She was reliable, dedicated to her patients, and very compassionate. Through the years she worked at Russell Memorial Hospital in Onaway, at Dr. Baltzer’s office in Cheboygan, and finished her nursing career with Hospice of the Straits where she was an exceptional hospice nurse and absolutely loved her job. Devoted to her Christian faith, Barb was a former member of Rogers City Baptist Church, attended church at North Country Baptist Church in Millersburg and was a member of Interlochen Bible Church after moving to Lake Ann. Content with the simple pleasures in life, Barb enjoyed working in her flower garden and arranging beautiful flower bouquets. She loved the trillium flowers that graced the hardwoods each spring and brightly colored Northern Cardinals. A relaxing day for Barb was going for a ride through the country or taking a long peaceful walk. She loved taking trips to the upper peninsula with her husband and spending time with her family. Barb enjoyed when her family gathered for a picnic or a holiday celebration where she always brought her special chocolate sheet cake. Barb’s gentle spirit, kind heart, and warm smile will be greatly missed by her son, Gary (Katy) Decker of Cheboygan; daughters, Judy (Mike) Manners of Lake Ann and Christen (Randy) Satchwell of Petoskey; eight grandchildren, Jason, Dustin, Abby, Nick, Elijah, Micah, Seth, and Kasey; as well as ten great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Shirley Braun of Marysville, Judy (Dave) Brenner of Cheboygan, Patricia (Tom) Schell of Onaway, and Jackie (Chane) Graziano of Florida and Boston; brother, Arnie (Julie) Vermilya of Millersburg; brother-in-law, Bob Decker of Onaway; and many nieces and nephews. Barb was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gary; an infant son, Jeffrey; infant grandsons, Daniel and Derick; and two sisters, Alice and Janice. Barb’s family will receive friends at Chagnon Funeral Home on Tuesday November 30, 2021 from 11:00 AM until the time of the funeral service beginning at 1:00 PM. Pastor James Brabson will officiate. Barb’s final resting place will be at Waverly Township Cemetery in Onaway. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Barb to McLaren Home Care and Hospice for Hospice of the Straits, ℅ McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation, 360 Connable Ave., Suite 3, Petoskey, MI 49770.
