FORTUNATO A. PARRINO Obituary

Fortunato “Slim” Angelo Parrino, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed peacefully in Merced, CA with his children by his side and was welcomed home by his Heavenly Father November 12, 2021 at the age of 89.  After graduating high school Slim was employed by the US Postal Service while attending Los Angeles Trade Technical College where he studied cabinet making. Slim enlisted in the Navy in 1951 and served active duty in the Korean War on the USS Saipan (CVL-48). He was honorably discharged with the following commendations: National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.

Following his completion of service he returned to the US Postal Service, met his future wife Emely, and then entered the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Academy. Slim served as a Deputy Sheriff for Los Angeles County until retirement and then fulfilled his dream of moving to Mariposa, Ca. He purchased the Callan Ranch in Bootjack and raised cattle, enjoyed gardening, horses, and dancing with the Bootjack Stompers. Slim’s love of wood working lead to him building hundreds of toys for children ranging from handheld puzzles to elaborate large rocking horses. He remodeled his home building all the cabinetry and built beautiful handmade furniture that he gifted to his family. Slim enjoyed hosting large family get togethers, shooting skeet, reloading, playing pinochle, cowboy westerns and competed for many years in the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) as “Mariposa Slim” well into his 80’s.  Slim is survived by the love of his life Emely, his wife of 66 years, his children Michael (Evonne), Anna (Michael), granddaughter Sarah, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Angelo and Catherine and his brothers Joseph and Thomas.
