Mary Esther Chavis was born November 21, 1955 in Darlington County, South Carolina, a daughter of Deacon Otis and Mother Mary Chavis. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and graduated from Hartsville Senior High School. Esther later moved to the Southern Pines/Aberdeen, North Carolina area until her death. She was a faithful member of Hartsville Deliverance Center under the leadership of her brother, Pastor David Chavis, and served as Worship Leader. Esther was self-employed with her own cleaning business (Esther’s Cleaning Services) and Companionship Caregiving Services with her nieces, Princess and Ontra. Early on, she was a charter member of the 40 voice choir known as “The Ensembles” under the direction of her brother, the late Pastor O.J. Chavis. She and her sister Ruth were known as “The Chavis Sisters”. Esther traveled all across the country with Evangelist Lydia Jones from Pinehurst, North Carolina as the original Lydia Jones Singer, later accompanied by her baby sister Ruth Jones but at the time known as Ruth Chavis. She touched and encouraged everyone she knew and even those she didn’t know. She would always find strangers coming to her to talk without even knowing who she was and they would always leave encouraged and motivated. And let’s not forget she was always dressed. She never left the house without looking nice. You know you can dress when your nieces go in your closet to wear something, LOL! Surviving to cherish the memory of Mary Esther Chavis are; her three brothers, Deacon Johnny (Helen) Chavis of Richmond, VA, Elder King Chavis of Aberdeen, NC, and Pastor David (Laverne) Chavis of Hartsville, SC; one sister, Ruth (Pastor Arvetra) Jones of Aberdeen, NC; godchildren, Tiahna, Angel, Lorraine, Princess, BJ, and Vicki; a host of nieces, nephews who were like the children she never had as well as great-nieces and great-nephews; many other family members and dear friends.
