Catherine G. Huggins Obituary

Catherine “Cathy” G. Huggins of the Town of Newburgh entered into rest Sunday, October 24, 2021 after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. She was 74. Daughter of the late Joseph and Rose (Crudele) Gondolfo, Cathy was born November 5, 1946 in Newburgh, NY. As a daughter to a proud farming family, she and her sister worked tirelessly harvesting apples, plums, cherries and other fruits all throughout their adolescence. She began working for George Northrop, ESQ. during her Senior year at Newburgh Free Academy, graduating in 1964. Her work continued as a paralegal until her retirement. After her retirement, Cathy developed a great passion for volunteerism serving as a past auxiliary president and foundation board member of Montefiore/St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, past president of the Newburgh Day Nursery, volunteer positions for Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh, St. Luke’s and Trinity Church thrift shops and several other charitable organizations. Cathy loved to travel and lived in many places due to her husband’s Air Force service. A natural athlete, she adapted quickly to base life, achieving All Island Championship status in both Softball and Basketball. Her true love was tennis. Cathy competed on and Captained countless USTA teams, playing with the same group of ladies for over 30 years. Despite her love of travel and seeing different places, Cathy ultimately decided to settle back in the Hudson Valley, recently spending the last nine winters with her husband in their Naples, FL home. Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, Aunt and friend to many. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Philip L.; son, Philip J. and his wife, Julia; sister, Rose Marie Gondolfo; granddaughter, Sophia Rose, sister-in-law Fannie all of the Town of Newburgh; sister-in-law Maureen (Mark) McBean of Florida and many nieces and nephews. Private cremation took place at Cedar Hill Cemetery. A celebration of Cathy’s life will take place on Saturday, October 30, 2021 from 3 to 6 PM at White, Venuto & Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service, 188 North Plank Road, Newburgh. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Cathy’s memory to American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org.
