John Sarkise Hashim, M.D. Obituary

John Sarkise Hashim, M.D. passed peacefully on October 23, 2021 after a brief illness. He is survived by son John S. Hashim, Jr. (Carlisle), Debra A. Hashim, Paul C. Hashim (Sharon), and Phillip A. Hashim (Kathleen); 3 grandchildren: Marion Hashim, Julia Riismandel (Timothy), and Christine Medaris (Chad); four great-grandchildren; and brother Peter S. Hashim (Ann Elkin). John was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts on September 14, 1927, the oldest of four children of Lebanese Immigrants Sarkise Peter Hashim and Cecilia Hashim. The family lived in a tenement above a grocery store they owned. The family lived the American Dream. John graduated from St. James High School in Haverhill, the University of New Hampshire, and the George Washington University School of Medicine, from which he was its youngest graduate for many years at the age of 21. He did his internship and residency in radiology at Providence Hospital in Washington, DC where he met Fredina “Freddi” Saunderson who was an operating room nurse there. John joined the Air Force as a physician during the Korean War and they married at the base in Pleasanton, California. A year later in Pleasanton they had their first child, John Jr. Eventually they moved to Detroit and two years later had their second child, Debra. Some time later they moved to Washington, D.C. where they expanded their family to include Paul and lastly Phillip. John entered into the private practice of radiology and maintained several offices through the DC and the Maryland suburbs. John became increasingly involved in the medical community of private practice physicians in Southeast Washington and southern Prince George’s County. During this time he was highly respected and consulted for his knowledge and expertise in diagnostic radiology. He was an active member of Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church in Washington, DC., from the time a small group of families attended Mass in the chapel with the Maronite seminarians. The parish community thrived, and he and Freddi with several other couples served as founding parishioners of the Maronite Church facility on Alaska Avenue, N.W., adjacent to the Seminary. He was very knowledgeable of classical music and opera, and he and Freddi were longtime followers of the National Symphony Orchestra when they performed at the DAR Constitution Hall, and later at the Kennedy Center. They also were members of the Board of the Summer Opera Theater Company affiliated with Catholic University. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. During the coronavirus pandemic, he was happy (and proud!!) to have 2 Boston Red Sox masks to wear. He and Freddi had eclectic interests in collecting and enjoyed their collections of paintings and antiquities. He was especially proud of a wood picture frame made by his father that was carved and gilded by hand and displayed in their home. The frame includes a Federal style eagle with the flag of Lebanon on the left and the flag of the United States on the right. He maintained his knowledge of Arabic learned in childhood as it was spoken by his parents. He also enjoyed practicing German, French, and Italian throughout his life. Following his decision to close his office practice, he joined the Radiology Department at Kaiser Permanente and worked at several Kaiser locations before eventually focusing on the branch in Kensington, MD which was closest to home. He finally retired from the practice of radiology in 2009 at the age of 82 but maintained his medical license through continuing education for a number of years to keep current in the field which he had loved for decades. His beloved wife Freddi passed away in 2015 and he lived independently at their home in Leisure World, MD, until his passing on October 23. He is loved and missed by his family and friends who wish him an eternal Rest In Peace. Relatives and friends may call at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church, 7142 Alaska Avenue, NW, Washington, DC, on Thursday, October 28, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:30 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Wheaton, Maryland. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made in his name to Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church or to Catholic Charities .
