Jill Black Obituary

Sabougla---Jill Ray Black, 89, passed away at her home in Sabougla on Saturday, October 23, 2021. Born November 18, 1931, in Bruce, MS, she was the daughter of the late Jim Ray and the late Jimmie Wilson Ray. Jill was a 1949 graduate of Calhoun City High School. She played on the basketball team, and was a starter on the 1949 State Championship team. After high school, she continued playing basketball for Hinds Jr. College, and she won two State Championships there. She was also an avid football fan of the Calhoun City Wildcats and the Ole Miss Rebels. In 1951, she married William Eugene Black, and they spent 48 wonderful years together until his passing in 1999. She was a member of Sabougla Baptist Church, where she served as Church clerk and played piano for over 50 years. She worked part time as a secretary for Slate Springs Gas Company for over 25 years, and she also worked for the State Board of Health, who “just so happened” to have a traveling basketball team in which she played. Above all, she loved her family, and cherished the time spent with her grandkids and great-grandkids. She will be missed dearly by her friends and family, but her memory will live on forever in their hearts. Pryor Funeral Home is honored to serve Jill’s family. A Graveside Service celebrating her life will be held on Sunday, October 24, 2021, at 4:00pm at Sabougla Cemetery. Visitation will immediately follow the graveside service at Sabougla Baptist Church. Bro. Johnny Hale and Bro. Sherman Barnett will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Ben Black, Paul Black, Will Black, Brett Tubbs, Ronnie Patterson, Travis England, R.M. England, and J.W. Meadows. She leaves behind her daughter, Carla Tubbs and her husband David of Springdale, AR; son, Barry Black and his wife Margaret of Calhoun City; sisters-in-law, Sheryl Flood and Helon Ray; grandchildren, Ben Black (Emily), Paul Black (Leslie), Brett Tubbs (Ruthie), and Will Black (Hillary); great-grandchildren, Eli Black, Darby Renfro, Dylan Black, Carson Renfro, Raylee Black, Ryder Black, Sallie Evans Black, Maggie Wade Black, Jude Tubbs, and Jolene Tubbs; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, W.E. Black; and brothers, Jim Ray, Jr., Billy Ray, and Phil Ray. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sabougla Baptist Church or the Gideons Bible Program. Expressions of sympathy may be left for the family at pryorfuneralhome.com.
