Nettie Whitehead -GLBFH Obituary

Nettie Whitehead of Jonesboro who died Monday, October 18, 2021, at Saint Bernard’s Hospital. Nettie grew up in Jonesboro and was a graduate of Jonesboro Public Schools. She earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education from Arkansas State University. She was a teacher and a federal program director for Jonesboro Public Schools and spent her last six years in Education as the principal of Nema Tuggle (East) Elementary, the school she attended as a child. She had been a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Delta Kappa Gamma, and was past president of the Craighead County Retired Teachers of St Bernard’s Auxiliary. She gave many years of volunteer service at St. Bernard’s and the Children’s Colony. She also assisted at the Helping Neighbors Pantry. She is a member of City Gate Worship Center. As a member of Trinity Church for 33 years, she served as its first children’s church teacher and taught Sunday School for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Whitehead, her parents, Charles and Irene Miller, her brother, Hugh Miller, and five sisters, Myrtle Adams, Ruby West, Georgia Decker, Jean Jones, and Catherine Aiken. Survivors include two daughters, Cherry Broadaway (Grady) and Michelle Brown (Rick), grandchildren, Ethan Broadaway, Anna Broadaway, Michael-David Brown, Brie Whitton, and Shannon Masingale, nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and a sister Loretta Cartinhour. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of St. Bernard’s Auxiliary. Visitation will be at 10 am at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home Friday, October 22, 2021. Service will begin at 11 with Pastor Bill Barber officiating. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery. Masks are required. Memorials may be made to the scholarship funds of Craighead County Retired Teachers and St. Bernard’s Auxiliary.
