Blanch, NC - It is with profound sorrow we announce the death of  Retired Senior Chief Petty Officer Turner H. Totten of Stephentown Road, Blanch, North Carolina, transitioned peacefully from this life on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina after a decline in health.

Turner was surrounded and supported by his loving wife, sons, family, and friends during the last days of his life. He began this life’s journey in Rockingham County, North Carolina on March 14, 1957, and was the offspring of Olivia Turner Totten and the late Houston Totten, Jr.

As a native of Caswell County, Turner was a 1975 graduate of Bartlett Yancey High School. He accepted Christ and became a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church where he served until his call into the United States Navy. After 25 years of service to his country, Turner returned to Caswell County and became a member of the High Rock Missionary Baptist Church serving as Usher, Trustee, and Deacon.

Turner’s entire life was the life of a servant leader. During his 25 years of military service, Turner’s primary duties included being a Career Information Advisor and a Command Career Information Retention Counselor/Coordination. Turner received the following decorations, medals, badges, citations, or campaign ribbons:

Enlisted Service Warfare Specialist (ISWS); Navy “E” Ribbon; Joint Meritorious Unit Award; Southwest Asia Service Medal W/2 Bronze Stars; Armed Forces Service Medal; NATO Medal; Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3); Meritorious Unit Commendation; Good Conduct Medal (6); Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (5); National Defense Service Medal (1); Navy Recruiting Ribbon; Humanitarian Services Medal and Navy Achievement Medal (3).

Following retirement from the Navy, Turner gained employment with the North Carolina Employment Security Commission as a disabled veteran’s outreach specialists. He later worked as a driver recruiter with Swift Transportation and was last employed with FedEx Ground as a field contractor relations specialist. Turner’s concern for the welfare of veterans predominated his decision to join the American Legion Post 210. He became Commander and was proactive in leading the Post upward. Turner’s dedication to service also prompted his membership into the Montford Marines. He served his post and community faithfully until the end.

In addition to his father, Turner was preceded in death by his two sisters, Nora and Ida Totten.

Senior Chief Petty Officer Turner H. Totten leaves to treasure fond memories and lament his passing to his wife, Naomi; three sons, Tadashi C. Totten, Tetsuo H. Totten, and Semaj McIver (Rowena); his beloved mother, Oliva Turner Totten; three sisters, Yvonne Totten, Cynthia Clark, and Genola Allen (Mike); and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family, and friends.

Service details are as follows:

A viewing  will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 from 2:00pm to 7:00pm in the Juanita S. Fulton Memorial Chapel of Fulton-Walton Funeral Home. 

Family Visitation  will be Wednesday, October 27, 2021 from 12 noon to 1:00pm at the Caswell County Civic Center in Yanceyville, NC

Funeral Service  will be Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 1:00pm at the Caswell County Civic Center in Yanceyville, NC.

Military Honors and Military Interment  will be Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 2:00pm at Sandhills State Veteran Cemetery in Spring Lake, NC.
