Francis John Benevides

Francis J. Benevides, 96, of Ellington, died peacefully on Monday, October 11, 2021, at Manchester Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Windsor, in his parents’ home, Francis was the son of the late Joao Carreiro Benevides and Maria da Trindade (Botelho) Benevides. He graduated from John Fitch High School in 1943 and attended Springfield Technical Community College. An Army volunteer during World War II, he was stationed in Hawaii and Japan attaining the rank of sergeant. His civilian career included over 40 years as a foreman for The United States Envelope Company primarily in Rockville. He was married to his amazing wife Rita, who predeceased him, for over 65 years. Together they enjoyed traveling, RV-ing across the USA, gardening, dancing – especially to polkas, and the love of their lives – their family. They were communicants at St. Joseph Church in Rockville where he was an usher. Franny was a Yankees and Giants fan who enjoyed watching and playing sports. He was a champion softball pitcher, bowler, horseshoe thrower and more. He leaves his two sons Don (Bonnie) of Vernon, and Gary (Lynn) Benevides of Rockville. His two granddaughters Katie (Chris) Hallett of Northborough, MA and Megan (Thad) Fox of Philadelphia, PA brought him endless joy. Family gatherings, including his many nieces and nephews, were always a highlight. Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers Manuel, Joey, Johnny, Tony, Louie, and Richie Benevides; and sisters Mary Benevides Noyes and Angie Benevides Nock. Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. on October 25th at St. Joseph Church, 33 West Street, Rockville. Burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery in Vernon. Calling hours will be on October 24th from 1:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect Street, Rockville. Masks will be required.
