Helen Cleland (Nettles) Tuten Obituary

On Thursday morning, October 14, 2021, Helen Cleland (Nettles) Tuten, 92, of Ridgeland, was ushered into her Heavenly home. Helen was a godly woman who loved the Lord with all of her heart. God’s love radiated through her to her family, church family, friends, co-workers and sometimes even to strangers that stumbled into her path. She leaves behind a legacy of God’s amazing love and grace and was an example to all who knew her.

Helen was born in Ridgeland, South Carolina on December 19, 1928 to the late William Riley and Evelyn Mason Cleland. She was predeceased in life by two husbands, the late William L. Nettles, Jr. (1992) and Garnett B.Tuten (2001) and one brother, Norris Cleland. She is survived by two daughters, Jeanette Mohn and Cathy McElhaney (Richard); seven grandchildren, Vali Mixson (Ronald), Amy Hayward (Alford), Carl Allen Tillman, Jr., Melissa Cristofoletti (Fabian), Wendy Tillman Morris (Gary), Elizabeth Smith (Keith), Richard Grady McElhaney (Stephanie); seventeen great-grandchildren, and fourteen great-great grandchildren; and three siblings, Willie Mae Sparks (Jerry), Donald Cleland (Juanita), and Jean “Pug” Bekich (Ted).

Helen loved her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, with all of her heart, and she loved God’s Word. Though she was a humble, gentle woman, Helen was nonetheless a powerful prayer warrior as others would often say that she had a direct line into Heaven. Only heaven knows what a wonderful and eternal impact all of her many years of faithful praying have had on her family, her friends, and the world at large. She was a faithful member of Coosawhatchie Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Coosawhatchie Baptist Church followed by a service to celebrate her life at 12:00 PM. in the sanctuary. Interment will be at Grahamville Cemetery, Ridgeland.

In lieu of flowers, all memorials may be made to the Coosawhatchie Baptist Church Building Fund PO Box 479 Ridgeland, SC 29936.
