A Celebration of Life for Jon Roberts, 45, will be Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in care of Jon’s family to be decided at a later date and divided among organizations close to his heart. Jon would want a fun and casual atmosphere – of course everyone knows he loved the Bears, Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Notre Dame. Jon was one of the good ones! You think of Jon as an adult of good character, always willing to help others, kind words and gestures, strength beyond measure, and a positive outlook toward the future and life in general. But Jon was all of those things, even as a kid growing up. Jon was a great baseball player, loved playing in the men’s softball league, and was a great pool shark. In fact, he was an awesome pool player, able to run the table over and over, playing for money and fun. Some people had never met him, but knew him by name and reputation. A little about Jon’s character and perseverance relates back to his adolescence when he was diagnosed with Myotonic Dystrophy in the 9th grade. He handled the disease with humor and grace, and never stopped living life to the fullest of his ability. His uncle Brian may have said it best, “His muscles may have gotten weak, but Jon was the strongest man we knew.” Jon graduated from Chariton High School with the Class of 1995. He always loved sports and enjoyed playing Little League. He also loved bowling, and of course playing pool. He made a name for himself with his skill as a pool player and was able to continue playing in leagues until recently. Not only did he like to play, but he was also a great coach and contributor to the Little League and other recreation team sports. Being born in Des Moines and raised in Chariton, Grundy Center, Britt, Indianola, Beaumont Texas, and back to Chariton, Jon was always very close to his family. He was born to Terry and Sherrill Snuggs Roberts, and later became very close to Doug Skinner, whom he always referred to as “Dad”. He loved his siblings: Nikki, Kelly, Jordan, and Lindsay; and he referred to several close friends as brother or sister; and everyone needs an “Uncle Jon” as he was close to many kids as he liked to tease and guide them. His aunts, Debi and Cyndi, would put extra lipstick on and kiss him on the forehead, I mean enough lipstick that it wouldn’t wash off, plus they used different colors so Sherrill would know who had been there. Jon just had a way with people and could always connect with his doctors, nurses, and therapists. He was able to convince his doctor to write a prescription for a “Bloody Mary,” and then convinced his friend and nurse to sometimes bring him two, and even had him sit down with him and share one together. Jon liked good food, especially 321 Ribs, and could always make room for Jelly Belly candy (he and Nikki shared a love for these). Jon had reoccurring dreams, very detailed dreams of a 1964 Impala Convertible involving his brother, Jordan. So Jordan came up with a custom color, and Nash Cox drew up the perfect vision in his dream, a picture that was always treasured by Jon. Jon was a fighter and had defied the odds many times. They said he would never talk or be able to eat again, but he did and he was able to talk very well and often. He enjoyed talking face to face through video apps with his family and friends. Jon passed away October 13, 2021, in Waterloo, at the age of 45. He will be greatly missed by his mom and dad, Sherrill and Doug Skinner; grandparents: Gary and Irene Snuggs, and Betty Snuggs; siblings: Nikki Roberts, Kelly (Bryan) Barr, Jordan (Amanda) Roberts, and Lindsay (Matt) Welsh; nieces and nephews: Noah, Nash, Davin, Drayton, Sawyer, Finn, Brock, Baylor, and Beau; aunts and uncle: Debi, Cyndi, and Brian; his dog, Max; and many relatives and friends. Preceding him in death was his father, Terry Roberts; and his maternal great grandparents, Granville and Dortha Snuggs.
