Sumner Edwin Svedeman Obituary

It is with great sorrow that the family of Sumner Svedeman announces his passing on October 13, 2021. Sumner died peacefully at age 85.

Born in Milton on May 4, 1936, the youngest of three sons to Nils Stuart Svedeman and Mabel (Pierce) Svedeman, Sumner attended Milton High School where he was an outstanding athlete playing football, baseball, and basketball. After graduating in 1954, he attended Northeastern University studying Engineering. While at Northeastern, Sumner continued to play baseball at a semi-pro level, culminating in an offer to try out for the Milwaukee (formerly Boston) Braves, which he declined.

After a stint with the Army Corps of Engineers, he was employed by Pneumatic Scale in Quincy. Sumner was a valuable employee and worked his way up to Vice President of Tech and Sales. While working at Pneumatic Scales, he met his future wife Lois (Martell). Together they moved to Cincinnati and had 4 children, returning to Hingham Massachusetts in 1977.

Sumner was loved by his wife, family, and friends thanks to his kindness, understanding, and sense of humor. He spent lots of time on the tennis court and softball fields during his lifetime, both as a player and a coach. In addition to playing sports he loved to travel. He and Lois traveled with friends to places all over the world; Africa, Australia, Europe, South America, the Caribbean, and Canada to name a few.

After retiring, Sumner moved to Cape Cod where he joined the Cape Cod Senior Softball League. He was an exceptional first baseman and played in many of the age brackets. He was fond of the multiple championship teams he played on, particularly the Yardarm teams.

Sumner especially loved spending time with his three grandchildren. He enjoyed attending all of their music and sporting events, or taking them to the beach or to a Cape Cod summer league game. He was proud of all their accomplishments. He instilled a humble approach to life, to be genuine and kind and his grandkids greatly appreciated his quick and witty sense of humor.

Sumner is survived by his wife of 59 years Lois, his daughter Donna Svedeman of Hanover, his son James and wife Tracey Svedeman of La Jolla, CA, his daughter Lauri Hanrahan and her husband Joseph of Hanover, and son Eric Svedeman of Weymouth; as well as his 3 beloved grandchildren Nathan, Eric and Elsa Hanrahan of Hanover along with many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for early November. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sumners name can be made to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation at crohnscolitisfoundation.org.
