Gerald R. Anthony Obituary

Gerald Robert Anthony of Dartmouth, MA died on October 7th, 2021, at UMASS Worcester Memorial Hospital of complications related to COVID-19. He was the loving husband of Kathleen (Green) Anthony who survives him. Born in New Bedford on February 14th, 1936. He was the son of Gerald and Anna (Foley) Anthony. He attended Holy Name Grammar school, Holy Family High School (1953), and UMASS Dartmouth (1957) where he received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He was employed by the United States Department of the Navy for over 30 years at both the Naval Underwater Systems Center (NUSC) in Newport Rhode Island and the Naval Systems Headquarters Command Center in Washington D.C.

He and Kathleen had four children Michael Anthony and his wife Nancy (Sears) Anthony of Dracut, MA, Robert Anthony and his partner Carol Anne Place-Rioux of Dartmouth, MA, Sharon Anthony and her partner Clifford McFarland of Manchester NH, and Christopher Anthony and his partner Brenda Cataloni of Medway, MA.   Gerald leaves behind his sister Marion Asquino of Bourne, MA, his brother Kevin Anthony of Fairhaven, MA and his wife Nancy Longworth Leger-Costa. 

They will be greatly missed by their Grandchildren and all the children in the family who saw them as adoptive grand or great grandparents. Their grandchildren Michaela (Anthony) Zaring and her husband Mark Zaring, Samantha Anthony, Cameron Anthony, Elizabeth Anthony, Brennen Carter, Brittany Carter and Erin Carter. The daughters of Brenda; Hannah and Autumn.  The children of Carole  Amanda, Derek his son Noah and nephew Elijah.   Sadly, their Great Granddaughter Harper at only 20 months will know him from mostly from pictures and the stories we will tell her growing up.

Gerald enjoyed watching New England sports especially the Celtics for all his life. He enjoyed reading, walking and cooking. He also cherished the time he spent working with his lifelong best friends with whom he attended college and then worked with for most of his life; Dexter Clough, Charlie McCarthy, and Ron Nichols whom their children all knew as adopted Uncles.

Some of the joys he and Cathy shared with family and friends were camping, vacationing, and especially spending time at Papoose Pond Maine as well as many trips to Hawaii.

This obituary is adapted from an original penned by Gerald himself and it contained this message to his family all who might read this tale of his life: “Cathy and I always felt that we were the luckiest people in the world to have such wonderful offspring, family and friends in our lives.”
