ARTUSO, Luigia Olga (nee Baron) -

Mrs. Luigia Artuso passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at Hospice Wellington on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at the age of 91 years.

Beloved wife of the late Giuseppe "Joe" Artuso (2001). Loving mother of David Artuso (Janice), Gloria Gaskell (Robert), Diana Teeter (the late Price) and Linda Jacobi (Robbie). Cherished "Nona" of Christina Tober (Erich), Justin Artuso, the late Meghan Davis (Keith), Amanda Martin (Zac), Madlyn Jacobi, Jackson Jacobi and Tristan Jacobi and Bisnona to Kaitlyn, Hunter, Myles, Cooper, Jack, Malachi, Wyatt, and Zoe. Survived by her sisters Assunta and Erminia and by many nieces and nephews in Canada, Italy, and Australia. Predeceased by her parents Giuseppe and Paolina and her siblings Maria, Olga, Antonio and Pierina.

Luigia immigrated to Canada in 1952 to join her fiancé, Joe. They were married in Toronto on October 20. In 1953, they moved to Guelph to begin their family because she preferred life in a small town. They both worked tirelessly to provide for their family.

Luigia lovingly tended to her vegetable and flower gardens until she moved to the Elridge. Over the years, she knitted and crocheted countless baby blankets, sweaters, and booties for family, friends, and donations. She was a life-long member of Holy Rosary church and a proud member of the Italian Canadian Club and the Trevisani Nel Mondo.

She was a dedicated wife, mother, and mother-in-law, and was incredibly proud to be a Nona, and Bisnona. There was always good food on the table and lots of homemade baking. Her butter tarts were second to none. Many became familiar with “Nona night” when she fed her growing family on Wednesday nights.

She loved to socialize and never refused an invitation for a gathering or celebration, quite often being one of the last to leave. She made many friendships over the years and enjoyed her mid-week euchre games and Saturday night cards with her gang. She was always up for a visit including on the day she was moved to Hospice. The “ladies” came by for a final laugh, hug, and a few tears. They were a tightknit group that looked out for each other and endured much together.

Mom was an inspiration to us all. While she may have been small, she was mighty, incredibly independent and the epitome of strength inside and out. She quietly and humbly created a legacy that we are proud to model.

The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care mom received during her stay in respite at the Elliot. The nurses and PSWs treated mom with the utmost respect, care, and kindness. We would also like to thank the health care providers and volunteers at Hospice from the bottom of our hearts. Your care and compassion were truly more than we would have ever expected.

Resting at the Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon Street, Guelph on Thursday, October 14, 2021 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church, 175 Emma Street, Guelph on Friday, October 15, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. To attend a visitation time or the funeral mass, please RSVP on the funeral home website.
